I had a look at a 230+ Bhp Dave walker & Dave Andrews K series recently; it didn't have the lumpy idle at all, sounded fairly ordinary at idle.

You probably realise this, but intake filtration is one of the most important aspects of wear on a high output K engine, especially on our farm roads up here.

I had a Hurricane on mine, but it was always the same story, wear on rings and bores from ingested sh*t on road runs, as opposed to use on the track. I have the same Hurricane on the Hondas, but it does not seem to affect them.

regarding oil i asked an expert ( works in an oil lab ) what he would recommend for a engine that has been know to throu a rod ( tt 260 ) his answer was based on shear properties ( HTHS ), typical 5W-40 oils are around 3.5cP with low friction fuel economy ones only being around 2.9cP. the higher the better the bearing protection 10w-60 can give better protection but being a thicker oil, it can cause slightly higher oil temps due to internal friction not a problem with a good oil cooler fitted

Still undecided about weather to baffle the sump or not. The K in an Elise is not as susceptible to oil surge as it is in a Caterham due to being mounted transverse as opposed to longitudinally. Having said that it can still give problems in long fast corners. Another option, which I think is better is to run an anti surge tank like the Apollo system but space is the issue. Not a lot of room in that there engine bay. Probably won't get it done just now, will wait and see if it becomes an issue as oil pressure will be logged with the data logger so will show up if it is dropping off in corners. Also a question of cost, I have to draw the line somewhere, this carry on isn't cheap as you well know. I would like to fit either a baffled sump or surge tank so we will see, might have a chat to Agra and see if they can sort something out.
As for the oil, spoke with Millers tech line and am going with there CFS 5W40 for now. Everything I do with the car, sprints, hillclimbs and trackdays, is considered short duration events so should offer good protection. Also using there mineral based run in oil and assembly lube.

Now have one of Bernard Scouces airboxes but not sure which filter to run with it. Think I might use a K&N barrel filter on the end of the hose instead of the piper that he recommends but don't suppose it will make much difference as they are both well used companies when it comes to filters. Will make sure the airbox is properly sealed though, going to stick a couple extra bolts through the back plate for the reasons you talked about.

Edit: Bob, found this http://www.hellierperformance.com/17401.html near the bottom of the page. Doesn't break the bank and looks the business. Will give them a phone on Monday and see if it's suitable for an Elise as it's been designed for a Caterham.

Only joking, keep 'em coming as I am quite forgetful sometimes, especially if I don't write stuff down. Going to put a huge white board in the garage for that reason.

Just realised that I did not fit a Hurricane until the Honda was put in. I too had the complete Bernard set up with a Piper filter. I had it fitted next to the side vent for coolest air, but not sure that I would not have been better with it central so that it did not pick up so much dirt from the road.

I take it you mean do away with the hose and just stick the filter straight onto the airbox.

I would take advice on that, though probably try a short length of hose as opposed to straight on.

I may have been unlucky, and the advice from Bernard, SteveB, and those that have done many hours testing on the configurations would advice you differently.

filter wise i found a long hose connected to the side pod with a witches tit foam filter ( exige air box ) gave better results than a cone filter fitted on a hose but open in the engine bay
i used motorcross filter oil for the foam filter its sticky as s***t but i believe best results where a foam filter over the trumpets made by pipercross ( short trumpets only ) i think rob c over on seloc swopped to it, however for big power k series as tut has said steve b is very helpfull and been around long enough to off tried and r/r tested most options

Will look more closely at filters nearer the time, probably just pick one and go with it but will PM Steve on Seloc to hear his thoughts.

Steve, the crank, flywheel,clutch cover, rods and pistons are going to Agra in Dundee once the dry build is done and dusted. They will be doing the balancing and machining the pistons, once I've worked out by how much.

Wondering more if the K-pro supports it.

It will work with anything, but does require you to isolate the wires for injector control, tacho and fit wheel speed sensors. After that you can log any engine parameter you have a sensor for by piggy backing the logger to the sensor. Also does video overlay of what you have logged, and can be used with many hand held GPS devices to plot the track your on. Much like the pro kit out there but much cheaper. Also has shift light function along with TC (fully user configurable for both wet and dry) and LC (again user configurable for both wet and dry). I got in a the start and will be interesting to see how it works on the Elise as most others are on Caterhams.
