New Zealand info

Post by Andy D » Wed Jan 14, 2009 3:38 pm

I've quit my job and I'm off to Australia and New Zealand for 10 weeks at the end of this month with my brother and a mate :D Basically the trip involves Brisbane to Sydney and then Christchurch to Aukland and have stuff planned and some accomodation booked up with friends/relatives in Oz :thumbsup

Anybody got any tips/advice on New Zealand? Have been to Oz before so know what to expect but NZ looks like there is loads to see and do. Have no digs booked in NZ but was thinking about renting a camper??? Everybody I speak to raves about it and reckons its got some similarities to Scotland.

Lucky bugger! :)

I was over in NZ last March for a few weeks...It's a fantastic place, and I'd love to return...

I was staying with my mate & his wife in Christchurch, but borrowed his car for a week and headed around the south island with some other friends who were also over at the time...

I can recommend:

Arthurs Pass National Park

Franz Josef / Fox Glacier - We went horse riding around here for not a lot of £££, and it was great...

Wanaka - Beautiful little town

The Crowne pass - Road to Queenstown...I wore out the brake pads in my borrowed A4 driving up and down this...

Queenstown - Great for drinking, and all the adventure stuff like bungee, sky diving, jet boat, rafting etc...

Christchurch itself is a hoot - Although I was mainly out drinking at night, so didn't see it during the day...

Akoroa (sp?) - You can see the whales / dolphins etc...Or go fishing instead, like we did on a chartered boat...

There's heaps to see and do...I didn't scratch the surface...I hear Millford Sound / Dunedin / Invercargill / Hammner Springs are all worth a look...There is a bit of a well worn tourist trail, clockwise around the south island...Most guidebooks will keep you right... :)

As for petrolhead activities - There's Ruapuna circuit in Christchurch...I did a driver day there in an RX7 and FF1600...No rev limits, or restrictions like KH experience days...Great fun, and not too expensive given the exchange rate at the time...(The guy who runs it is like a kiwi walshy... )

You'll have a blast - I'm very jealous! :D

I spent several weeks touring around South Island on my honeymoon. Fantastic country, and campervan is definitely the way to go. Things you must do:

- Swim with wild dolphins at Kaikura north of Christchurch - quite surreal.
- Go to some of the great wineries
- Do a tandem skydive (but be warned it was the start of my expensive addiction).
- Sea kayak up the Abel Tasmin coast
- A bungee jump - I did the original one off off the Kawura Gore Bridge, but the Nevis Skywire looks even better
- This http://www.frogz.co.nz/ - much more exciting than white water rafting

It is such a brilliant place and the people are so friendly you can't fail to have a great time 8)

It's quite far away.

Thats all the important stuff I can remember about it, but I am sure there must be more. :thumbsup

Lucky for some.

A mate of mine has blogged his tour of New Zealand at http://www.wanderingscotsman.com/labels ... aland.html. He bought and sold a campervan while he was there - EDIT sorry bought and sold a Subaru Legacy and hired a campervan. It might give you some ideas. He's normally happy to share his experiences if you want to get in touch with him.

Me and the other half spent three and a half weeks touring round NZ back in October, pretty much split equally between North and South Islands. One of my pals emigrated out there about four years ago and his work carries him to all corners of the country so he was a good source for us as to what to see and what to miss.

How long are you in NZ for? My folks are going to Oz and NZ in February so I put together a three week itinarary for them which I can forward through if you'd like?

From a tourist's point of view, we preferred the South Island more but plenty of things to do on both. Christchurch is a nice town but you probably won't want more than a couple of nights there to be fair. The road from Christchurch to Wanaka is really nice and passes Lake Tekapo and Pukake (views that put Scotland to shame). Wanaka is nice and you can take light aircraft flights to Millford Sound/Mount Cook/Fox and Franz Josef glaciers. That's also where we went tandem sky diving :thumbsup . You'll want to head for Queenstown for the night life I guess but there's plenty to do during the day too round there (got to try one of the river jet boats - google Shotover Jets). Other highlights for us was swimming with Dolphins in Queen Charlotte Sound but you can do that in loads of places (like Akaroa mentioned above). On the North Island, try looking up Gravity Canyon south of Taihape. Pretty mental to be fair but worth it for the adrenalin rush... Also the mud pools, hot springs, geysers, Maori experiences etc in the Rotorua area (just to say you did some culture  ).

Things to miss? We thought Bay of Islands was overrated. People rave about the beauty but it was beaten by an average day on the West Coast of Scotland really and a long way out of the way - only head up if you have a load of spare time. Also Invercargill is supposed to be a bit of a sh1thole and is a fair way South of Queenstown. Only makes sense if you head for Dunedin too but then as my mate put it, 'if I wanted to see Scottish architecture and speak to Scots, I'd stay in Scotland'. Apparently not worth the extra drive South unless you've never seen Edinburgh

Finally, nobody has a good word to say about the campervans. They're slow and clog up the narrow roads and are by no means the best or cheapest way to get around. Apparently you are still supposed to pay to pitch every night in a campsite i.e no just stopping in laybys. Better to hire a car for a pittance (although we pushed the boat out and hired an E92 3 series cabriolet for the trip  ) and make use of the great quality hotels and motels available in every town an village. By the way, I was led to believe that the quality of the roads and driving was going to be terrible - in all honesty, I see more dodgy moves every day in Aberdeen than I saw in the whole trip out there...

Anyway, wrote too much but hopefully gives you some ideas...

Spotted lots of camper Toyota Estima's (Previa), and Hi Ace's on the road...A few with 3-4 lads on board...Stuck in my mind, as the thought of sleeping in a Previa with another 3 sweaty / smelly blokes (no showering facilities), would put me off...The stench must be pretty funky in the morning...

We just drove to where we fancied, and then looked for a cheap motel / hotel...You can also go to any of the numerous tourist information centres, and book on the day for the next town you're stopping in...If you split the cost a few ways, it's probably no more expensive than a camper...(There's also hostels - You can pay a bit more and get better facilities).

The standard of driving was generally good - Although frustrating to get stuck behind campers travelling at 30mph, with little scope to overtake...Some of the roads are amazing...Would love to drive them in an Elise...Don't seem to have the same heavy police presence that Aussie roads have, especially on the west coast...(Think I'd get sentenced to firing squad if they'd caught me when I was trying to make up time to the next destination... )

We absolutely loved doing it by campervan. It gives you the freedom to stop without bothering with hotel booking etc, and most of the time we camped wild. The South Island is so empy there were loads of quiet places to stop for the night, often with stunning scenery all around. Sitting with a beer in your hand by your camper next to a deserted lake, watching the sun go down over snow capped mountains beats a thousand nights in a hotel in my book. There are also lots of free DOC (Department of Conservation) camp sites with showers etc. Mind you, a lot of the mountain roads would have been brilliant fun in something sporty rather than a lumbering van. Ideally you want a Winebago with an Exige on a trailer behind when you want it :D

Cheers guys :thumbsup loads of good tips for places to see. I'm going to be there for 3 weeks so we will probably split the accomodation between camping and hotels but either way it sounds like I might need to extend the trip or go back to see the bits I've missed

I've vowed years ago never to do a bungee jump so that isn't on my itinery but would love to do a parachute jump  not sure if this makes sense to the guys who have done both but I don't think I could throw myself of a bridge

The rest of the stuff looks awesome though and I definately want to swim with dolphins and Kayak. :thumbsup

I've done both and they were quite different...Some say bungee jumping is akin to commiting suicide, but being saved at the last millisecond...

The parachute jump was way more fun - Although hanging, legs dangling out a plane at 12,000ft, was quite surreal...I did my one over the Remarkables mountain range near Queenstown, NZ, and the views were amazing... :thumbsup
