Funny, last night was the first time in ages ch4 has worked upstairs for me.

It was the worst GD i've seen in aa long time. Not much in the way of design either.

The majority of the houses may not be to ones tastes but normally you can apriciate the owners realising their dream. This one just seemed like a nutter with a mix of bad taste specialising is fake US mills, plus bad luck and lacking the ability to make an intelligent decision.

Agreed the design wasnt up to much, but personally i was inspired by the chap attempting to fulfill his dream. Also doing most of the work himself was a feat in it self i reckon.

The show has gone some way to give me the kick up the ar5e that i require to get on and do something with my land. I will of course build to my planning and make sure ive got everything in writing!

Project is very similar to one I did the structural design for years ago. Architect had a victorian mansion house that was gutted in a fire. Rebuilt with a semi circular glass and steel extension.

Be interesting to see how this one turns out although they have just got rid of their main contractor and are running it themselves so it will be a fcking disaster.

Like that a lot, agree should have been left single level, and the fittings in new "wing" are a bit clinical and cold, but pers think id be happy there, stunning views, amazing to watch the change in the weather and seasons. Couldnt get the thought of mark lammar out my head from the first time i saw the guy though

Didnt like them much, Agreewith kev on the two storey bit looking a bit odd....

They have spent some money - the sofas in the modern extension would have been the best part of £20k
(we are the Scottish dealer for the same manufacturer).

The rest of the interior was way too forced, they should have got a pro in, it was far too like a NextHome catalogue

Kenny, the disaster that was planned when they dumped their main contractor never came to light, and I have to say, I thought they did a great job of turning the place around with him not giving much other than his chequebook, and she ended up running the show with the help of her contractors, as she admitted herself.

I agree with the Kevster, that they shouldn't have added the second story of the new build, but i can see why they did, but still would have look visually better with the single story new build.

Anyway, yes it wasn't filled with the disasters and set backs that make grand designs the show for what it often is, but i thought it was good!

I quite like the end result, certainly not the disaster I expected. Not sure the two parts worked together that well in the end; The curve of the new part detracted appeared too deliberate an attempt to counter the squareness of the old. As above, the two storey part was odd.

A million to buy the place plus what they spent on it. They never revealed their budget or their final spend, I suspect if they had it would very much been a financial disaster for most people, they were lucky enough to have his banking bonuses to fall back on.

The folly was nice, the rest was another contemporay nonsense that looked more like a visitor centre than a home.
