Ingliston Memories

Post by Rory » Thu Apr 02, 2009 9:44 pm

Just found this website which I thought would be interesting for those of us who witnessed our first live motorsport at this venue.

Cracking collection of photos from early 70s to early 80s.

Some of the machinery was fantastic!

Think I have seen that website or at least some of the photos before. Loving the old pics of KH.

And you think Knockhill looks bleak today? My thoughts as well even before I read the caption.

^^^^Indeed Kenny.

The lack of trees in this view of Clark's adds to the bleakness of this KH picture.

I also noted a number of Ingliston racing pics naming Ian Forrest as the driver.....I presume he's the KH Ian Forrest?

Remember this like yesterday - while watching the event with some friends this guy pushed in beside me. Only when he said "sorry" did I realise it was the man himself, Jackie Stewart.

Well found! Brilliant to see some of these old piccys, reminding me of a few names and scenes from the past.

Ingliston was a fun circuit to drive in those days, wish I could go round it nowadays in the 340 or Elise, the circuit would be ideally suited to our sort of cars.

Real trip down memory lane -

Great find. Now I'm tempted to go look out old pics. I have loads from that era, from Ingleston and Doune mostly... (taken by my parents obviously as I was a baby in those days  )

I remember going down with my oldest brother, he race his mk 2 escort there back in the early 80's. I remember his good freind Ron Cummings race Esprit. That was my first lotus love.

Oh the days.

Here is a picture of Ian's car at Ingleston. I also have one of him racing Ricky Gaulds Imp, but can not find it at the moment.

Do they not use Ingliston at all now then?

Obviously being a child of the early 80s I don't remember it. Is it beside the Royal Highland showground type thing?

I remember being driven around a sort of circuit Westfield, and a Caterham at a kit car show at the Royal Highland in the mid 90s when I was in my teens.

That increadible feeling as the guy pushed the 2 litre 16v vauxhall powered caterham towards the hairpin then solidly hit the break pedal projecting me forward in the seat so that only the race harness was holding me in the car, then giving it too much through the corners and controlling the slide. The fact that this tiny little car almost identical to the one from The Prisoner was keeping up with and overtaking all these bigger cars...

I remember deciding then that I *really* wanted one of those Seven-esques, especially as used Westfield prices were seemingly really affordable.

Actually, the fact I *really* wanted one probably placed it prior to 1996 as I was all Elise after that!

My first motorsport experience was visiting Ingliston circa 89-90, some very fond memories of wandering round the paddock getting up close to "real racing cars" :D

I'm sure I still have some of the programs from those events, will need to dig them out. I remember being hugely impressed by Ron Cummings' car at that time which was a black Lancia Stratos. It would just disappear off into the distance, usually lapping the entire field

There are bits of the track remaining. It can be assembled into a sprint venue using some access roads methinks. They slapped buildings on top of one end of the track - unsure when, but not that long ago in the grand scheme of things.

All the track is still there, I blagged onto it a few years back at some car show to give pax laps. We were not allowed to go full throttle through the arena area and approach to the esses where the majority of the new buildings are but it's still drivable. Not sure you could ever run trackdays or motorsport on the full circuit ever again mind you.
