coolant querie

Post by john-160 » Tue May 19, 2009 8:55 pm

I am refilling my coolant, I have made my own pressure kit to push the coolant round the system, slight problem I do not have a pressure gage. Do I put reasonable pressure on system and release bleed screws ie front back any comments welcome. I am not happy about filling and starting reving and taking a chance in overheating.

The S2 manual says 5psi and open the return pipe then radiator bleed screw. You have a PM

An eezi bleed fits the coolant tank , and use a tyre at 5psi as pressure source . :thumbsup

It won't overheat anytime soon if you are reasonable ... from cold refill to dangerously hot is not going to happen in 5 minutes of idling. I don't use pressure when refilling - I just brim the expansion tank and keep it brimmed whilst bleeding.

Cheers, all went well started engine keeping an eye on temp gauge, noticed no read out it normally comes on at 40ish, switched off, had a look wire broken on sender. I must have broken it putting pipes in or out. luckily it is a single connection, put a small spade on it stuck it on squirt of silicon to keep water and dirt out, repaired until I can get a proper plug. Any views on temp air sender on induction box, I seem to remember somone saying to put it on the clean side of air box but it is fitted on the original on the dirty side. I personally would rather put it on the dirty side no chance of dirt going into engine, any views on drilling carbon? I started of just doing the thermostate conversion, then decided to have the clam off, now decided cam belt , oil and filters, throttle body, induction kit, also noticed slight break in weld on short flexy exhaust, its a pleasure to work on with clam off, down side the cheap nasty fittings, rusty screws etc, they will be changed.

If the inlet air temperature sensor is currently fitted on the dirty side and if you have had no reliability problems with it (it's not going to care about some grit/water) I would be inclined to leave it where it is. As you say, when you start fitting things on the clean side you run the risk of ingesting whatever fittings you've used to fix it.

But, on plenum-based K-series engines I thought the IAT always fitted in the plenum itself rather than the airbox ... is there not a green sensor screwed into #4 runner?

Not on the Sport 160s Robin. Not sure why but Lotus decided to mount it in the airbox instead.

IIRC the S1 S-160 has the IAT in the airbox and a blanking plug in the plenum . . . stangely I run the same plenum on my engine and the IAT is where you mention on the #4 tract . . . IIRC the S-160 uses an ITG airbox and it has a bung which you can pop out to fit the IAT if required . . . mines does also . . .

They'll have done that to prevent the heat soak - the IAT output rises quite quickly on idle in the alloy plenum (pretty sure the one on the RLC was in the 60s on idle - I don't suppose the actual inlet air temperature was that when ambient was nearer 0!).
