Elise S1 horn - where is it?!

Post by Corranga » Mon May 25, 2009 5:55 pm

My horn isn't working.

It's not the fuse, nor the relay, so i'm suspecting either a rhubarbed horn or a dodgy connection, but I can't for the life of me seew the damn thing anywhere... (including google  )

where is it?

It's in the front crash, driver's side IIRC. To gain access you may need to remove the front undertray and/or wheel arch liner - take a look into the air intake first to establish which side of the crash structure it is before dismantling. IIRC there is also a harness connector in the front services compartment for the horn - this may have corroded or become disconnected.

Cheers,
Robin

Thanks Robin, it is indeed where you said.

For future reference if anyone is looking / to make it clearer...

(RHD 98 Elise S1)
To gain access you need to remove the front under tray. It is located on the drivers side.
The bolt that holds it in place / wiring connectors are located on the other side of the crash structure, and is accessible by removing drivers side wheel arch liner (or pulling it down a bit as I did, they are fairly flexible.)

The wiring seems to come up just in front of the inflate-a-wheel spare, then joins the rest of the loom and heads off towards the fuse box at the other side of the car.

I couldn't see it via the air intake.

Unluckily for me, the actual horn works, so there must be a break in the wiring somewhere.

It'll get a visit from an auto electrician friend tomorrow hopefully.

pah i managed to swap it out while in place by bendind the wheel arch liner. last time it broke it was the wiring that had worn through. can you hear the relay click ?

Solved, and car MOT'd yesterday.

It was the wiring coming out the bottom of the fuse box.

"I think it's this purple wire"
*gentle pull*
"Yep, the one that's come off in my hand"

A bit wire and some solder later, problem solved!

ps. Sanjoy, I also switched it out with the arch liner still in, the bolts holing my arch liner on are orange and round, and I couldn't be bothered finding my mole grips ;)

Thanks guys

Chris
