Calling all S2 Exige S owners.....

Post by I-Mac » Tue Jun 23, 2009 1:50 pm

I am looking at possibly purchasing an Exige S......Hopefully with the 240BHP pack....

What should I look for? What have been your experiences with the cars? Any obvious faults to watchout for etc etc?

Do they come with the AP 4pots as standard?? What are the differences between the N/A car and the Supercharged cars??

So many questions I know, but I would like to go into a purchasing situation with at least 1/2 a clue hehe :)

All help greatly appreciated :)

I'm in Newburgh, welcome to pop over for a nosey and a chat.
I've run a 'vanilla' 190 Exige and current GT Edition is 'everything on it' spec.

Cheers guys :)

Ali, I may well take you up on the offer of a chat and a nosey round your motor :) Any advice would be great :)

I have a couple of cars to sell before I could buy the Exige, but the though has spurred me into actually doing something towards it today :)

Hi Iain,

Welcome to S_E :thumbsup

I've had an Exige S 240 PP since April 2008. An Elise 111R for 2 years before that. The performance pack comes with 4 pot front brakes and braided hoses as standard. Lot's of other goodies such as launch control, full length roof scoop, RS14 pads, traction control and lighweight wheels. The power is increased from 220 to 240 with I believe a fifth injector and some ECU work. With the N/A yota engine there is 2nd cam that comes in a 6200 rpm and gives a big jump in the powerband. Biggest difference with the S/C car is that engine just pushes smoothly through the 2nd cam cut in. The S/C cars have a more linear power delivery through the rev range. Definitely better to drive on the road and on track. There are a few that will disagree with this but had a similar conversation with a certain Welsh driving legend and he agreed with me, so can't be all bad!

The Exige is a fantastic car and super quick but I miss the versatility of the Elise. It would be great to take the roof off easily on a night like tonight. If I was buying again (unlikely for sometime ) I'd go for the Elise S/C or have a katana s/c fitted to a 111R. Although I drove the Elise S/C before buying the Exige and the sloppy gearchange really put me off. I was doing more trackdays or planned to do more so plumped for the Exige. If you are mainly driving on the road go for the Elise.

If your plan is to track the car then pop down to KH next time a track day is on, you're welcome to a pax to see how the cars compare.

Whichever you go for Exige or Elise you won't look back :thumbsup

If you need any more info give me a shout

Cheers Clark

Hi Ian,

More of the same here..I had the 220 s and now have the 240 s..great cars..

As I tell everyone that listens..get the latest car you can afford, Lotus QA/QC has come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of years and they seem to have fixed many of the issues found on earlier cars even though there is no official upgrade noted.

Come along to KH this Saturday and you can have a pax on the various versions. If you want a soft top though then buy an Elise (or a motorcycle  )

Take care,

Frank

Ah, I'm oft forgotten.

Especially these days as I'm doing more miles in the Mini than the Exige and haven't been on track since April...

Thanks guys ! Thats cleared up a lot of the questions I had!

I think it's going to be a while before i have the pennies for an Exige sadly, but I will continue to scrimp and save....

I have a 1979 RS2000 that needs to be sold first too and lots of bits for fords needing sold so once I have sold the dead wood I can go for my dream Exige :)

Is there a difference in gear change "sloppyness" between the elise and exige ???? I have been in anthonyyules yellow S2 exige as pax and loved it.....ignited my fire for another lotus :)

I would be hillclimbing my exige and tracking it too, general "cheap" motorsport thrills..... :)

If its for motorsport as well, why would you want an overweight car with borderline gearbox reliability?

Ali does seem to have had a few problems with his car for a new model.

When buying one 2nd hand, make sure to have the ECU read out.

I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's.

Probably not the Elise S/C I tried wasn't run in and probably hadn't been PDI'd. The gearchange was like stirring a big pot of porridge. Went for the Exige after trying an 06 'S' Graeme had in the showroom at the time. When I got mine it had the same mushy gear change but this was changed at first service. I understood from MMC there was new linkage on the 07 cars which turned out to be a problem so they reverted back to a previous supplier. The gearchange in Elise/Exige should be indentical as it is the same in both.

It's only overweight when I'm in it mate :D I've shed the standard exhaust and rear panel since new which must have saved 15kg at least. If I lop off a limb should get under 1000kg laden :D :D
