What's underwear? Can you get it with Ferrari logos?
S1 wheel bearings are fine until you get them and the uprights hot, then put them under a lot of sideways load; then it seems that the various cheesium components expand/bend/otherwise give up enough to allow the flange to wear on the inboard end. This then allows the flange to move inside the bearing and I suppose the bearing is being loaded all on the outboard end. Anyway, soon enough the bearing itself is also shagged. The uprights survive, but pushing bearings in and out of them while cold (which is the way most people do it) must plane off the odd thou of "metal", so once you've changed a couple then the new ones last less time. You're fine if you're still on your second or third bearing I think, but some of the racers were doing a couple of bearings every other weekend ...
So it's really heat that kills them to start with, then wear and tear on the upright and flange reduce the life expectancy of each successive bearing.
For a Honda it's a no brainer that you want the steel rear uprights and if the flanges are tapered, the harder steel flanges that elise parts sell (but don't swap flanges for the sake of it - they're not that cheap!). There's a lot more heat floating around due to proximity of manifold to drive shafts, the brakes and tyres are working harder (more power = more kinetic energy to dissipate) and there's more weight to lug around the corners.
If there was a way to fit the steel rear uprights to the front, I would suggest doing that too - only the truly committed racing driver will notice the increase in unsprung weight ...
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Frolic 2010 - the june version
Bloody minefield Robin, and difficult to know where to stop.
Since I bought N3 2.5 years ago, the only real problem that I have had was with CV joints, and a leaking rad. Took me through FF7 and DP without a murmer, and a lot of trackdays and road run miles since, all on R tyres and not hanging around. On the other hand it could have broken down every other day without too much surprise.
Its no big deal if it breaks down in the UK, but if I make FF next year then that would be the last one, so would do everything that I could to get the car through the two weeks.

Donnie doesn't count then? Pity.robin wrote:Paul, provided you've done either Oulton or Cadwell with LOT and haven't crashed (or at least, they don't remember you crashing/being black flagged) you will be OK - pretty sure you've done at least one Cadwell (hung over, possible minor offage, but it was wet), so you should be OK. It's just no-novices, not no-FF-novices I think.

Looking at the shop, the next Donnie day _is_ a no-novices day, so I would expect Donnie would make you a non-novice too.

I meant our outing at Donnie in April. No funds for any forthcoming TD action, particularly if I am to have any chance of saving up for FF June 2010.

Although I have the Alloy ones on mine (Gulp). Replaced the bearings and measured the hub etc and its all fine but will do a good few track days here and see how they last. Although mine is a honda my manifold is a good 3 inches away from the gearbox/intermediate shaft, so shouldn't have the same trouble with melting cv gators etc but will have all the heat from the extra BHP to worry about.

My drive shaft is about 5mm from the exhaust manifold, can not even get the Honda heatshield between them, so have wrapped the driveshaft in aluminium tape.
May look at getting the latest S/C exhaust manifold as used on the Link-up kit, as mine is the original one designed by Scuffers over six years ago.
