Q plate insurance?
Q plate insurance?
I had heard that q plate cars are cheaper to insure than standard cars, and i'd like a fun car but the premiums are unbelievable.
anyone know where to get q plate insurance quotes as google doesn't turn up that many.
would you avoid a q plated lotus?

everything is still up in the air with the move, but i like having something to aim towards

Re: Q plate insurance?
No idea on the insurance front but I certainly wouldnt be paying "good" S1 money for a Q-plated S2.....

As for avoiding it or not, it depends how it got its Q plate and whether you want to sell it in the future or drive it until it falls apart.
If it got a brand new chassis it should have kept its original registration number and not required an SVA so this has definitely not happened.
If it got a second hand chassis then it is right that it is on a Q plate, which fits with the advert. So, you can be certain that at least the chassis is not new or original and many other bits may not be too. Of course, it won't have had a chassis swap for fun, it will have been in a big enough accident to wreck the old one.
Other obvious negatives:
People don't understand what Q plate means and can assume things like stolen, recovered which affects resale value
It can't ever have a private plate on it, although if you only wanted to disguise its age you get a free one with the car
But there is one positive, you won't need to worry about emissions again, you won't even need a cat.
Cheers,
Simon

Re: Q plate insurance?
I wonder if it is a coincidence that it's from Norfolk? Could be a homer by a Lotus employee? I'm not sure if would make it better or worse - either way, I don't think I would buy it unless it was ludicrously cheap! Of course there may be some financial incentives, but replacing the chassis is far from simple - to all intents and purposes the car has been completely rebuilt, so that means getting all the right sealants, thread locking compounds, mating compounds, etc., etc. It's not that it's really hard to do, but the scope for cutting corners is going to be vast - and without major dismantling you may not be able to see what corners have been cut.

Robin

Re: Q plate insurance?
Thanks guys,
i'll check what the insurance would be, as thats the major problem with my age, so it may be worth it if the insurance is lower than it would be normally.
i'd probably try and knock him down quite a bit though but i think i'd drive it into the ground instead of resale

I know ill just get abuse for this but if insurance is your main concern Adam a lego elise is group 16 instead of 20.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.
....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

More complicated than that.......If it got a brand new chassis it should have kept its original registration number and not required an SVA so this has definitely not happened
It works on a points basis and every major component gets points allocated against its original state. So it is possible to have a new chassis and still have to be sva'd as other major components have been replaced .
I would agree that a repaired tub is more likely as it would not make financial sense to effect the glue/nut/bolt rebuild that Robin refers to
Love the theory that the whole car may have been secreted out of Hethel in component form every day for about six months

Why bother when there are so many other cars on the market

Re: Q plate insurance?
If memory serves me correctly to get a new registration every componant must be new.
exeptions are gearbox / engine but these must be in as new condition i.e. rebuilt to as new.
could be wrong as it was a good few years ago I was thinking about building a GTM Libra or a Locost.

Lazy is right, I planned to buy a VX prior to buying my S1 as the insurance was much cheaper. Having access to both regularly (the vx more regularly as Erica's car runs more than mineLazydonkey wrote:I know ill just get abuse for this but if insurance is your main concern Adam a lego elise is group 16 instead of 20.

From my experience, if it's too good to be true, it most probably is, and an 11k miles s2 for <9 grand probably is.

And you'd have the "sporting heritage" of a car company that's gone down the toilet!Lazydonkey wrote:I know ill just get abuse for this but if insurance is your main concern Adam a lego elise is group 16 instead of 20.
