On a bit of a tanget here but does anyone have knowledge of these watches that monitor your heart rate. Are they any use or a tad gimmicky :?:

Thanks in advance

Cal, it all depends what you plan to use it for. As part of a training regime where you need to keep a target heart rate, they're great - some let you set audible alarms if your heart rate falls below or exceeds a certain level so you stay in the training zone. Some have a built in pedometer so you can track your distance run.

If you're serious about training and know your target rates etc, they're great. Otherwise, they're a (sometimes expensive) gimmic :)

One thing though - don't buy them 2nd hand - the heart monitors belts/straps can get pretty sweaty ;)

A guy i go running with at lunch times has just splashed out and bought himself this http://www.polarusa.com/us-en/products/ ... g/FT80_G1/

Now, i sat and took the piss, as i use my wiggle bargain HR monitor at £30 http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/X-Tra ... 360024608/ and the total cost of his was £300 inc the GPS device.

However upon returning from our lunch time run, he had a feckin pile of awesome stats/graphs, and had whipped himself up a training programme within 10 minutes on the Polar website.

I think if you are super keen and really into your training then great, but honestly, the average person who goes out for an evening ride, or the odd run really doesn't need an expensive computer on their wrists! Nice toy though!

Was reading about the new LG Phone watch also:

Image

Image

"The gadget, which will be one of the three most expensive phones on the market, and is being sold exclusively by Orange, the operator, to pay as you go customers.

The watchphone, in looks and operation, appears to have stepped straight out of a 1980s spy thriller and Orange says it has an inbuilt speaker that lets you “listen to the Essential James Bond theme album when you’re imprisoned in a fake volcano or battling with Jaws”.

For those that tire of raising their wrists to their mouth every time they make a call, there is a bluetooth handset that can be strapped to their ear.

However, despite its futuristic design and high price tag – only an iPhone and Nokia's N97 are more expensive for pay-as-you-go-users – the LG GD910 fails to tick all the boxes. Users cannot surf the internet or enjoy the host of applications that an iPhone user enjoys.

Both Orange and LG admit the high price means that the device will initially only appeal to dedicated technophiles.

Francois Mahieu, Orange's director of devices in Britain, said: “The LG Touchscreen Watchphone is one of several ‘future phones’ we’re bringing to UK consumers this year. Being handmade, the device really is highly original and exclusively limited – so you’ll be the envy of all your friends if you’re fortunate enough to get your hands on one.”

Comic book sleuth Dick Tracy first used his two-way watchphone back in the 1940s but it has taken a long time for manufacturers to fit all of a mobile phone's capability onto a wrist.

The device has a standby battery time of up to 12 days meaning you do not have to charge it too regularly just to tell the time. "

I am sure there will be a number of watch phones introduced in the near future with better resolutions and functions.

I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's.

I know someone who has one of these.. and he earned it himself...

bit of a closet watch fancier here... don't get me dragged into looking at watches.. I'm already in enough trouble for spending money on the car.

tell him I'll give him £5k for it Vic :) .. if it comes with dive logs etc of course ;)

In all seriousness though - that's a Sea Dweller, not a Sub - I presume your mate has a Sub? The one pictured is probably worth between £150 and £200k

My mate Bert was a saturation Diver for several years and was issued with his watch after I don't know how many dives. All I know is that it isn't for sale. And your right it is probably worth more than his house.

Very nice watch, the model owned and worn by many a discerning gent.

The Comex dial is obviously very special from a rarity point of view and is an interesting part of the history of these watches.

Still I’m not sure it is worth £146k to £196k more than mine which I am fairly sure (Greg?) is identical in all other respects. If I had the cash I’d still buy the one I’ve got but would buy a 40ish foot yacht to sit on while I’m wearing it.
