Car is smooth enough and pulls well bit there is a hint of pinking at low revs under light load and it seems pretty thirsty. Averaged 23 mpg to date with a high of 25.5 mpg on the way back from London. The Honda S2 varied between 20 - 35 mpg on the road but was nowhere as quick or smooth.

That sounds about right to be honest Brian. The 340R is a brick aerodynamically and the S/C cars are a lot thirstier.
I'd be very surprised if it is pinking. The Hondas have a knock sensor so it will automaticallly retard the igntion if it detects pre-detonation.
Has it been custom mapped or is it still the original Link-Up map on it?

Just read about that. Your vtec has a manifold pressure window so that it won't engage unless your throttle is a good way down. Clever stu

Its more about varying the point in the rev range that the VTEC engages relative to load/throttle position. So if you are accelerating heavily it will come in at 4200RPM but if you are cruising on the motorway it won't engage till 6000RPM (well over 100 mph).
It not only makes it easier and more comfortable to drive long distances (eg. to and from track days) but it also makes it much more fuel efficient.

Yes it's a K100, not s/c and as far as I know has the original Link-up map.
It seems like mild pinking but doesn't happen every time. Could it be down to a dirty air filter or would that just reduce the power? I shouldn't complain about the thirst as it runs very smoothly certainly in comparison to the Phoenix map.
What's involved in applying the variable V-Tec tweak?

Has to be a flash on the K100 Brian, which will cost you a few pennies, but can be set yourself on a K-Pro. However it is something that should have really been done on the conversion. Does your VTEC kick in at 5800 rpm every time regardless of heavy or light throttle, or has it been set lower again to a fixed figure, ie 4800?
Dirty filter results in a loss of power as the engine cannot breath, pinking would normally be down to the mapping, ie engine running too lean. However worth cleaning your filter regularly especially if you do not know when it was last done. Do you have the service record with the car, as that should tell you when the plugs and fuel filter were last changed?

The thirst is probably solely down to the aero of the 340R. You certainly wouldn't expect pinking and thirst as one is caused by lean running and the other by rich running. (a little bit simplistic but you get the idea).

I've not taken much notice of when the V-Tec kicks in but I'm fairly sure it varies. I'm still getting used to the speed and quirks of the 340r, e.g. rev counter calibration, 3000rpm in the first segment then evenly spaced up to 9000rpm.
I've no service records since the Honda was fitted around 5k miles ago so its probably due an oil change, filter clean etc. by now. I agree with you Tut that running rich doesn't equate to the pinking, unless the map is lean under light loads.
I'll wait until Alan successfully maps his K-pro and maybe have Alan compare the two before deciding on what changes to make.

I also have a spare ECU Brian from N3 before it was S/C, PRD so the same JDM spec as your car.
You could try that to see if it made a difference.

Kpro arrived this morning and fitted it when i got in form work then Uploaded a map from a fellow Starkie.
Problem showed straight away, 02 reading 0 volts and no fuel ratio showing. Clearly a problem with the 02 as suspected earlier in week. Quick run to the MOT station just to compare readings and its now at 1.9 (better than 10.0). Probably becuase its a better suited map to my set up. MOT tester still saying "Computer says No".
Drove home and started checking all my wiring about 100 times over, all correct as far as i could tell. At about 10.00 and nearly ready to call it a day and buy a link up conversion from Dan (
) i found the problem. All maps that i had been using were calibrated for the PRA ECU, created a new calibration for a PRB and cut and pasted the map table from the Stark Map and everything started to work. Air/Fuel ratio showing 14.5 - 14.7, 02 reading 0.6 volts and idle dropped by about 200 rpm.
M.O.T station is open tomorrow so will drive out there and see.
