as a wedding present to myself I am going to buy one of these (getting married next Saturday!)

the question is do I wait until we fly to Thailand for our honeymoon and buy it at Dubai duty free? it's been a few years since I have been there, are the prices still significantly better than here in the UK? the usual price here is around the £1500 mark.

David,

Not much saving to be had at the airport. Not sure about downtown.

Congratulations on getting hitched. Hope you enjoy the day instead of just worrying about how much better the photos would be if you were doing them!

:cheers :)

cheers sir, I'm really looking forward to the wedding and with 4 other wedding photographers there the photos should be ok (with a bit of direction from myself of course) :thumbsup

the thing is though, we are just connecting at Dubai so it's the airport or nothing if I'm buying the watch there :?

David,

A pal of mine recently jumped on the plane down to Jersey to buy a watch. They pay 3% VAT equivalent, i.e. 13% saving, which saved him about £800 on an expensive piece of kit. He phoned the jewellers a couple of weeks in advance and told them what he wanted and they got it in specifically for him. Because they did not have to hold stock they gave him £300 off which meant that even with the return air fare and a good lunch he saved nearly a grand.

Probably not worth the hassle for you but worth at least thinking about for anybody who is buying watches or jewellery.

funny you should say that sir, my mate Ronald lives in Jersey and is flying up for the wedding next week (I suggested he brought his V8 Vantage or M3 but he reckons flying is better  ), I shall give him a call :thumbsup

Cheaper to have a holiday in South Africa and pick up a rock?

FTFY.

Add in long-haul business class flights... yes, lots cheaper. :)

I did have to buy one earlier this year. You should not even think of paying High Street prices. You can get much more for you money looking at some of the less conventional routes.

Agreed. I can't find the kind of rock I'm looking for on the high-street anyway. I was pretty amazed at the average to poor quality of the stones in most jewelers windows. They seem to trade on designer names only and hope nobody asks to see the cert.

Sorry, way off topic now. I would start a "Ring Lovers" thread, but I don't suppose that would get the right sort of feedback... :)

I bought Sacha's platinum engagement and wedding rings from these guys, I can highly recommend them :thumbsup

Her engagement ring is platinum, 0.50 carat, colour D, clarity VVS1 and excellent cut grade. It was over £1000 less than any high-street shop :D

don't know about that but thanks anyway :D

oh, and 'Lucy' is the design I went for, needless to say Sacha was and is very happy with it :thumbsup

that reminds me,

if I go to one more wedding where the best man thinks he is being funny and original by saying that with marriage there is three rings: the engagement ring, the wedding ring and the suffering, I will kill the bugger po'ed
