First snow

Post by tut » Fri Dec 18, 2009 9:43 am

.........and travel chaos down south. Hundreds stuck on Motorways overnight and now airports closed.

Clare just phoned from Aberdeen very upset, due to take off at 0800 but Gatwick shut down. She had achieved an interview with JP Morgan for a placing with them over the next Summer holidays which would have been a great career booster for her, tried to tell her that they will re-schedule it, but you know what blonde young quines are, thinks it's the end of the world.

Not jealous at all Ken.......

Clare just phoned to say that she has arrived at Gatwick 2.5 hours late, but is stuck on the plane as they have no buses to take them to the Terminal. No answer from JP Morgan either.

It was snowing quite heavily down here, last night - I live in East London, near the O2, and there was a least a centimetre or two covering the roads...

So, for a little bit of prep :

most of this can be avoided :

Highland Council preparations are well laid out :

It cost me £80/tyre for the Panda, but they'll last 5+yrs - given we live on a hill and my folks live in Aviemore, this is money well spent.

I like the quote given by the council bloke when asked if he had any advice to offer people in England "Yes, move north" :thumbsup

Just taken me half an hour to drive less than a mile to my house. We live at the top of a hill and have to deal with 13 speed bumps  after turning off the well gritted main road on to the sheet ice side roads, so can't build up any decent amount of speed to get me up the hill.

Eventually had to phone Susan to come and help after at least 20 people passed without offering any assistance

Still, had good fun though

Duggie same thing with me tonight cant belive how bad people are at driving in snow. I nearly made it up my hill untill the girl in front gave it full revs. 2nd gear steady speed people. Anyway i got stuck in my van along with a dozen others so got out my buckets and made about 12 trips to the grit box and fixed the main road. I had to tell people how to drive to get traffic moving  and not one bast!!! even helped, ever year this happens. For Alan and Janet thats the bottom of Sherry Drive ,Glad a dont live up next to you guys :)

From recollection, we now get snow less often and it's generally less severe, so yet again driver education / experience suffers and fewer people have the skillz to tackle it correctly, as said above re: mega-rev brigade. Oh and electronic driver aids have lessened the need for these skills as well (in fact these aids probably make it harder to build the skills even if you wanted to!)

I once recovered a Ford Sierra from a ditch after he'd slid off sheet ice on a minor road in Cumbria. The old "rock it" by just engaging then dipping the clutch on minimal revs, getting it rocking back and forth in the ditch then giving just a bit more juice each time it was rocking back the right way. No ropes, no pushing, nowt, just physics and patience :thumbsup

I really enjoy driving on snow. Quite miss it! Got a fair dusting down here in Linlithgow but not enough to make driving either interesting or dangerous :-) The kids should enjoy crunching around delivering Christmas cards in it though.
