First snow
Re: First snow
I think if you pick your timing you may find it easier than you'd be led to believe.
ABZ has clearly struggled, I remember probs like this with previous big dumps of snow in the city centre. But out of town, the A90 will not be impassable unless you are trying it overnight or early morning after a very large dump. You might consider avoiding the Glasgow area, seems to have come off worst for once, and if you are headed for D&G area then how about A90 to Forth Bridge, and cross-country to M74, instead of A90-A9-M80-M73-M74?
Just a thought.
For once, we are not going far at Xmas...well, not until Boxing Day or maybe 27th, when we shall be headed for West Cumbria (we'll see though!).

Re: First snow
The news is saying Aberdeen is struggling but I was out this afternoon and the place is dead. Came from the beach out Queens Road, over the drive and out past the airport at the back of 5pm and no hold ups and hardly any traffic. Roads were fine BTW.

+1. Main roads, anderson drive etc is ok. Just made a trip westhill ---> bridge of don and it wasn't too bad, just a bit slippy. Not particularly enjoyable though.Mikie711 wrote:The news is saying Aberdeen is struggling but I was out this afternoon and the place is dead. Re: First snow
What size of snow tyre are you using on the Panda? Would have liked to winterise mine as the GY F1s are particulalry rubbish in snow, but could never find a 195/45R15 with a winter tread. Or have you got a set of 14" wheels and taller tyres for winter?Mr Momo wrote:Took the Panda to work early this morning (roads very quiet at 7am...). Slippy (about 5 inches of new snow overnight), but nothing the SnowTracs couldn't cope with - great fun.
Got the wife's Freelander on Avon Winter Ice rubber, grip on snow is unbelievable. Unfortunately I seldom get a shot of it, especially if it is bad weather so have to make do with Panda.

Re: First snow
i left my work in town @ 3pm, as I had to pick up Fraser from the vet in Torphins. the further i got from town the less snow there was. Going to be a skating rink in the morning.
PS the only gritters i saw all day were the 2 sitting outside Burger King in Altens. This was after it took me 2 hours to get there from town

On a brighter note, we've just had the shortest day, roll on summer

Re: First snow
Here's hoping snow around Glasgow clears by Friday morning - Thursday overnight is looking clear and above freezing so there is hope.scottishselise wrote:thanks. thinking of skipping chrimbo travel. Aberdeen ---> SW Coast is normally 5hours, I am fearing double that and not a lot of fun inbetween!vxc wrote:snow is bad on main motorways around glasgow, and eastkilbride has the same
its 20mph on most roads ....took me 2hours to travel 10 motor way miles
Aberdeen -> SW Coast of England in 5 hours is good going

Re: First snow
Heard one of the gritter drivers moaning that they can't get anything cleared because they where stuck in traffic.

Re: First snow
i left newcastle atg 1 pm today and arrived in aberdeen at 5.10 pm this evening, the road was not bad - just the usual lorry hold ups, but all in all the east coast was not bad at all!!!
Re: First snow
I dug the car out tonight and took it for a spin. Great fun when the roads are clear

Re: First snow
Glasgow was a nightmare late afternoon/teatime - very unusual for this area. I'd say worst I've ever driven in (other than the when we get the odd sporadic blizzard.)
However, been out again recently and the main roads are mostly OK now (helped by very little traffic on roads.)
Lots of fun in B&Q and Sainsbury's car parks.
