The cameras will flash whichever way you're heading; you may not get a double flash if heading towards the camera, but the point is to waste the film - one picture wasted is a good picture :-) This only applies in Scotland where the camera is not used to convict oncoming traffic (something to do with taking pictures of people's faces I think?). Anyway, given the number that have been set off in this manner without the owner receiving a NIP I'm sure it's not an issue.

Of course, admitting to speeding on a public forum would be a mistake, especially for somebody who already has an ASBO ;-)

Cheers,
Robin

Dont think i agree with this. Doppler shift radar can distinguish direction (towards/away from detector only, not across).
Begs the question why the cameras are setup to flash when a car is coming towards the camera.
Is it just an attempt at some sort of athoritarian 'finger waving'?

As I understood it:

[RADAR geekery]
Doppler shift is relative to motion towards or away form the observer.

The returned signal is mixed with the outgoing signal to give a beat signal which is relative to approach/retreat speed only, not velocity.
Since beat frequency = |f1-f2| the directon is irrelevant.

Therefore the camera doesn't actually know if you are approaching or retreating but it doesn't flash a second time as you are out of view by the time it want's it's second pic.

The advantage being that you don't need to 'ping' the outgoing signal and wait for a reply - it can operate on continuous wave - much cheaper and simpler to find your speeding target with a band pass filter, beat frequency over a set limit = speeding = flash and take a pic :thumbsup

Are you sure it's only Scotland? I've made a point of setting off the forward-facing Gatsos for the last 7 years in Englandshire (especially South Yorks and a whole bunch in Northumberland) and never heard a word about it. Either you're mistaken or I've just found out where all my good karma has been going!

I've posted this before - maybe this should be a sticky!
Gatso cameras.
Only do you from behind.
If you approach one on the other side of the road - deliberately go thro it speeding.....
NOW - If it
a) Flashes - once or twice - this means there is no film in it.
or
b) Doesn't flash - this means there is film in it & its armed...

So, if you get flashed from behind - do a U-turn & go thro it speeding.
If it doesnt flash - you're fecked...>!!!

PS - One of mates from school is a traffic cop & he told me this.
Two negatives make a positive but only in Scotland do two positives make a negative - 'Aye right.'

Another point -
Why do they still have film in them ?
Surely they would be digital nowadays.
I heard before that they cost too much - but surely they would get their money back with all the extra speeding tickets they would get.

We do the same Graeme especially on the A68 on the way South. We were not sure on our first runs in 2000 and used to back off, but then I timed it so that one of our Elises was just alongside one and overtook at 80 tuts. He was not amused.

However I was backing up the rule of Robin, have a laugh and waste the film. I have never heard of anybody getting a ticket, and that is probably because they can not be issued, Gatsos can only get you on your own side of the road. Our friendly cops should be able to back this up.

ps otherwise Andy would be on a life time ban...........

That is interesting David and explains why sometimes I have not been flashed because it is armed and filmed, no flash and it is empty.

Love the second part, but I do not get flashed by Gatsos for a very good reason, so can not check it out.

I've heard that it's only in Scotland too and that's the reason why English cameras are painted yellow on both sides but Scottish ones only on the back. It makes no difference really, as long as you are out of shot by the time the second picture is taken which direction you were facing is irrelevant. There's no way to prove the offence without the second picture to show the distance you covered between the photos.

Perhaps the English Gatsos work for people doing 31mph in 30s :)

EDIT: I don't understand why they would ever just flash once. What's the point of that? They can't do anything with a single photo.

Camera vans may use pro laser?
I believe they are reluctant to use digital storage (for cameras and other uses) as it may be implied that it has been altered (or more easily altered)....or it may just be down to cost! Don't quote me on the first bit though.

It was because a Gatso photographed a prominent lawyer with his secretary/mistress in his Jag and the police sent the photo to his house and his wife opened his mail. He claimed it was against the law and he won so they can only work from behind where they actually photograph you for evidence. I think it is the same in England too.
