*important* Server Switch *important*

Post by simon » Mon Jun 26, 2006 1:04 pm

You may or may not know that the current forum is hosted by freeyabb.com for free. We (Shug, Ed, Simon I and I) have discussed moving the forum to a server that we have more control over. Simon I (ironside) has kindly taken the time to sort this all out along with a few other things that should become apparent soon.

We are requesting a dump of the forum database from the existing hosting company. Unfortunately, we don't know when the dump will be done and it also has to be emailed to the original forum create (Cal) who will then pass it on to Simon. As a result of this, we will lose posts when the switch is made.

There's nothing that can be done to avoid this happening and as soon as the switch is carried out, this forum will be locked. As long as you are using the http://www.scottishelises.com url, you won't have to change anything.

Cheers,

Si.

It really depends on what freeyabb include in the database dumps. As soon as we get it we'll know for sure. I would guess it will include PMs, posts, profiles and usernames.

Links and linked photos as part of posts, PMs and profiles and things should be fine too. I think the only thing there is a chance of losing are the avatars, depending on how they work and whether they are included in a the dump from freeyabb (if they are stored in the database or stored on the server as seperate files.)

That's not Del's address (that's scottish-elises.co.uk) That's one of the ones I bought. Simon has control over it now, so I daresay he'll see this and redirect....

Either way, it needs updated as there are still people joining freeyabb. I'm PMing them pointing them to here but I'd rather all our links were updated.
We also need to get a front page for the forum at some point so we can stick in some meta tags for the search engines to pick up. That will let us submit the url to search engines and make it easier to find :)
