I've done a couple of Lotus runs (ish).

1 proper organised run (Borders Run 08) where I got a bit lost and ended up taking a different route
1 not really a run Gairloch camping trip, different bits of following people etc, ended up spending most of the day with a guy in a similar car to mine, with similar ideas about what sort of pace to have heading to Applecross.
This was more of a same departure/destination thing, and worked quite well, but if you don't know the good roads etc, it's hard to figure where to go.
1 ended up following a club Lotus Elan M100 and an Esprit from KH to Dunns.

All 3 were very different but still great fun.

It would be a real shame to see an end to runs, or runs becoming private. If this is the way it goes, I hope anyone doing private runs posts a google maps link of the route (even afterwards) so others can try it out.

Hi Kevin, I hope the neck is not too sore and you get the insurance sorted - don't be put off a Lotus though!

I like road-runs (although I haven't done ones for ages). In the 'good' old days the cars were pretty much all the same - Elise S1s with a standard K-series engine in them and the drivers were of a similar ability. Every now and again you would get someone with an Exige or 340R who would be quicker - but no-one tried to keep up because it was an Exige or a 340R.

These days if you turn up with a standard S1 you will be "Captain Slow" so everyone turns up with either old cars modded up to their eye-balls or Elises with vastly different specs and engines - yet everyone drives in the same run at the same speeds - cue lots of accidents. Its natural to want to keep up (or even go faster) and that is where the trouble lies.

My last point is to ask - what is a road-run for? Is it to drive your car to the limit (get on track), to keep up with the faster Elise (go racing) to meet with like-minded enthusiasts (better) or see the great Scottish scenery whilst driving a great Scottish road (best of all). I'll just pootle along at the back and catch up at the RV if thats alright with you.

A Road Run for me,

Meet like minded people to enjoy some great roads and scenery with a stop for Lunch in the middle. As far as the pace, its never a race. I'm not saying I follow the Highway Code to the letter but I'm never beyond my own or the cars limits ......... Probably just my limits (cars quite good, im not).

i was in the "slow" group on the first and only road run i have ever been on and let's just say the fast run must have been into 3 figure "tuts" almost all the time, considering I was hitting it trying to catch up and I was still minutes behind everyone. i even remember looking at my speedo at one stage when a few S1 owners flew past me and couldn't believe my eyes! in the end I gave up trying to kill myself in the car as I knew I wasn't (and probably still not) capable of keeping up, instead I just took it easy and enjoyed the drive which i did.

when I did eventually catch up, there had been a bump. it's a shame but it does happen on these events - sometimes you can prevent it, sometime you can't. everyone is enjoying the run and there are more distractions than normal.

road runs IMO would be more fun kept to the speed limit and heading somewhere fun like flight museum etc. the rest can be kept to the track, if you like that sort of thing

when i crashed mine, the whiplash was damn sore!
tho it hurt more that i had crashed a lotus...
was looking to sell anyway, but didnt want to crash it and be without a last drive memory!

Anyways, sh1t happens.

as for road runs, i like being at the back and just toodle along and meet up when we all stop. its about enjoying the banter either end and the bit inbetween is usually great scenery and people driving as they would normally. it was always great seeing peoples reactions to lots of passing lotus! felt great being in the convoy!

totally different on track where i LOVED driving on the edge - putting it into corners quicker and quicker the more i developed as a driver!!
the better i got the more i realised how much of the elise i didnt use on roads.
2ndly, the crash was great for in me a way coz i got away with no real injury... yet i now knew the consequences of going off the black stuff...
sure, u know its a bad idea, but once uv crashed ur like "lol dude, no fecking way im doing that again". personally i think theres a hell of a skill to reign in the go-faster urge and to drive to all conditions, including someone going too wide on corners coming other way, or a patch of horse sh1t.

i am only posting to say "get on with it, dont let the hurt get at u!"

as for insurance, look at adverts and take the top highest 3 thats like ur car and dont settle for less than that. job done.

I hate to be the one to point out the obvious but he wasn't on the road run when the accident happened. The run had finished, everyone had split up and he was heading home. It could (and probably will be) argued that he was still on the run but if you take that POV then supposing we had all been on some planned event, KH or flight museum trip as an example, and he had his accident returning from them would that mean that all organized outings should be stooped also?

Further, what constitutes a road run. They way I see it if 2 or more people meet up and have a common destination that is a road run in a nut shell. The big question is how you get there. Of course your going to have cars with differing performance as well as drives with different ability's but I maintain that it is the drivers responsibility for his/her vehicle.

On runs that I have organised/taken part in we regularly stop to regroup, usually at junction or points of local interest, so as not to loose anybody and also so that no matter how slow you are driving you will know that we won't just leave you behind. The point being no one should feel pressured into keeping up if the pace is above their ability/comfort.

What happened to Kev is unfortunate, but sh*t happens.

Kevin - not the best but glad to see your still in one piece.

Speaking as the only other person out on Sunday who had not previously been on a run - I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it! Weather was $hit but the scenerie was superb!

Being new to the Lotus world and having only had my car for less than a month I was quite happy to sit at the back of the group and just go at my own pace for four reasons really:

1. I can't drive as well as some of the more experienced guys and I am still gaining confidence and learning in the car.
2. Before we set off Tut/Alan explained to me (not that I needed to be told) that the run was not a race/competition in any way shape or form.
3. The weather was utter dog $hit and the conditions were not great for a "dangerous" rear wheel drive car on A048's!
4. My car doesn't go as fast as a lot of the mental S1's!!

I was happy enough just driving where I was comfortable and had a great time on my first run!

I was the slowest person all day ....but going as fast as the person at the front is not what it is all about for me. Enjoying the day out in the car with fellow like minded people, driving on some quiet country roads with spectacular scenerie and then maybe getting a bite to eat before driving home does just fine for me!

Glad you enjoyed yourself, just a pity I couldn't stay till the end as I too thought it was shaping up to be a cracking day even though the weather wasn't the best.

Today's run with Alan was much better weather wise just wish I had brought my camera, some of the scenery was stunning with the snow capped mountains
