An Exige for the summer

Post by craig1983 » Tue Mar 23, 2010 7:55 am

So....I'm starting a new job in September (alot lower paid tho!!) so I was thinking about getting an Exige for the Spring/Summer while I can still afford it. Just wondered if anyone had any clever cost effective ideas for getting one for a few months.....short of buying one and selling it again in August!

Cheers,
Craig.

There appears to be a few more Exige's appearing on the market over the last few months. Still sitting at the 19 - 20k mark though. MMC have a nice ardent red one for around that price. Re selling it again, you could be taking 3K hit ... mind you I'm not great at selling stuff :)

Craig get in the queue

Well you will be lucky to pick any Exige up under 20k at the moment, prices have risen noticably since Jan/Feb.

I suggest you go buy a nice one for 20k then sell me it come autumn for 16k

Good luck in your search

Exige prices have definitely firmed up over the last year, but the same is true of nearly all used car prices. I bought my Beemer E91 320d for 12k this time last year - I have put 15k miles on it since and I reckon I could still sell it for what I paid for it. I read somewhere recently that 'prestige' cars less than 4 years old are up 15% in the last year, even 20% for the most sought after models. The market went into freefall with the start of the recession in 2008 and seems to have recovered to a more normal level over the last 12 months.

Generally across the board prices have gone up on used cars.
I bought my RX8-PZ for £7500 in Feb 2009. Put about 7-8K miles plus an extra owner on it & sold it almost exactly a year later for £8500.
I'm not the only one either... I know a certain Clio V6 owner on here had a better example PZ than mine & made quite a bit more than me (and in only about 9mths I think).

The way Lotus prices are going, especially the S1, the best time has passed. Cheapest on PH now is £8K, then quickly up to 9 and 10, topping at 15 for a standard engined one, and they are selling.

Cheapest on eBay is £10K compared to 6-7 not long ago. I was going to suggest anybody who wants one then buy Kinnon's, but I see that he has now sold it.

Anybody think leasing for 3-4 months is an option?

I somehow doubt it. Either way you will have to cover the depreciation.

If you really want an exige, get in there now and make sure it is taxed, MOT'd, not due a service and has good tyres. If you get that for say £20k, there is a good chance you will loose very little by selling it late July.

On the other hand if you buy at say £19.5k but it needs all of the above you could easily spend another £500-£1,200 which is money you wont get back.

You may be better just buying an S1 if you can find a "cheap" one and avoid spending money on it. It may even appreciate if you sell it early enough in the summer and Sterling is still in the toilet. Insurance on an S1 on a classic policy will most likely be better value than on an exige.

you'll take too big a hit for what it's worth, unless you have a few grand to spare - especially heading into winter.

buy an S1 - sell it again easy enough at the same price 6 months later :thumbsup
