Not quite as popular as he was though hey?
I think more people went to see AC/DC at Hampden than the Pope at Bellahouston.
Pope was cheaper too.

Ibrox gets 60k people every fortnight so why did they have to close the M77 ?

As a sign of respect (because of historical significance) a lot of the faithful were planning to travel by donkey. This takes longer and caused some of the congestion.

Actual reason - they had nowhere to park the coaches that were coming, so they turned it into a coach park...

What was wrong with using Ibrox Park, say?

Did he have to park on the M77 as well then.

Probably.
However, no matter what the football park, they're hardly going to let it be used as a coach park. The turf may well stand up to some knuckle dragging, but I doubt the same could be said of a coach.
If you mean host it in one of the Glasgow staduims, then you've pretty much halved the crowd Vs the Park, and if you specifically mean Ibrox, then I doubt the Rangers/Celtic Catlick/Proddy interface would go down too well.

And while I'm not sure of the exact whys and wherefores of the ownership of trunk roads, I'll bet that using private property like a football park would have added a huge amount more to the cooncils bill than simply slapping on a road closure and some diversions....

There were more coaches than would fit on the closed part of the M77 so they had overspill into local roads too.

Clearly I was being a bit tongue in cheek.
Let's not worry too much about parking logistics...other thank to be thankful that they didn't decide to use the M80 from Auchenkilns roundabout onwards. Ah, wait a minute, that's already a car park most mornings of the week
