A few from SIDC at Knockhill
Re: A few from SIDC at Knockhill
I saw the mini driving around Edinburgh on Friday.
Never noticed it on road or track before.

That must be some camera you've got. Our Elise (the purple one) hasn't looked that shiny for a long time
It is a new (to me) camera, but it doesn't have a "make car shiny" menu setting

I'm sure the 'shiny car' option will be out in a firmware update

Cheers.

I had been saving for a 7D for most of the year and was abut to buy when a mint 2nd hand 1D Mk III (3 years old) came up for sale for just a little bit more. I weighed them both up for about a day, before opting for the 1D for a number of reasons:flat-planedCrank wrote:Just checked the EXIF on your flickr shotsJohnStewart wrote:Thanks.duggiesmith wrote:Lovely pics John.

a) Auto focus speed, particularly in low light conditions.
b) 10fps
c) Weather sealing (let's face it Knockhill isn't sunny all the time

d) Battery life - I can take 2.5k shots over a weekend and still have 40% remaining. No need to carry spare batteries with me now and remember which have been used.
e) File size - 10mp is enough to print out fine at 24"x36", and my old PC would melt if I threw 20Mb RAW files at it. I'd also need to buy a stack of extra memory cards.
f) Noise at High ISO - I can shoot happily up to around 2000 - 2500ISO with very little noise and Lightroom copes easily with what noise there is.
One thing I didn't consider but find a great benefit now, is the ability to specify the prefix of the file names in camera, e.g. BTCCnnnn.jpg for example. It also has has dual CF/SD card slots, though I've not had the funds to buy an SD card yet.
The things I almost bought the 7D for were:
a) 8fps
b) Lovely screen for reviewing images on
c) Great auto focus
d) wireless flash control built in
e) great picture quality, even at higher ISOs
f) 1.6 crop factor, so gives extra reach for motorsport shots, though saying that I can now make more use of my 100-400 as before with the 40D, the 100mm was often too long as I couldn't get a whole car in frame and frequently switched to my 70-200 F4L as I moved between corners.
If you want a shot at any point, just let me know

I've just bought some hi res copies from John - they're superb.
I'd get your orders in now

Great photos John and can see you have sussed out where on track to get the different views you are after. NIce to see your logic in making your camera choice.JohnStewart wrote:

Had hoped to make it up with Skye along with Richard Gilmour & Sonia to see if we could get some pax laps. Richard & Sonia went over to IOM during the week and got held up by bad weather so ran out of time on their holiday and couldn't make it up on Saturday morning as they were doing final minute stuff before catching the afternoon Rosyth ferry. I lent Richard one of My Contour HD Cameras and he got some nice stuff on the IOM mountain course while they were over. That SIDC IOM trip is another great memory Skye and I have. Richard asked my to pass on his regards to you.

Thanks Iain - that IOM trip was very memorable and nice that you are still in touch with Richard.
Nice photos John - Michelle should take up track photography as well
I was just working my way around the track to get the same angle as your first one, but the track closed 5 minutes early.
