Suspension related....

Post by Rag_It » Sun Sep 26, 2010 8:46 pm

Having picked the car up over a month ago now, on the drive back up I knew something wasn't quite right, there was a slight clunking noise, usually at slower speeds on bumpy roads. I let Tommy know, and he said he wasn't aware of anything but would see me right if anything was an issue. I had been meaning to take it over to Robin, but not having driven it a lot due to work, and finding time to take it to Robin for further investigation i'd plan to visit next week.

This evening at very slow speed a very loud clunk from the left rear and then what sounded like a metal bar banging about on the undertray. The left rear tyre is indeed slightly closer to the clam now, with about one hand fitting inbetween from the tyre to the clam, about two or three on the other side. I know Tommy had the LSS refurbed only a year ago, and therefore thinking it might be wishbone or something?!!! <those that know me I am not technical however!>

It'd be nice and simple if i had got round to adding it to my AA cover and P&L, however having been too busy I haven't so it looks like i might have to nurse it to Falkland Performance!

Any thoughts?!!

could be a corroded lower spring platform letting go. not expensive and easy fix if no other damage.

take the wheel off, have a look and get some more pics.

Or a damper mounting bolt snapped ...

Don't drive the car.

Do take the wheel off and try and get some pictures from various angles inside the wheel arch.

Cheers,
Robin

There is no jack - you need to borrow a trolley jack from somebody else; you may need to drive the car up onto a plank or paving stone to gain a little extra ground clearance under the jacking point (see your owner's manual for jacking instructions).

If you're stuck I can pop up and take a look, but won't be before Wednesday.

Cheers,
Robin

If your looknig for the jack then take these guys up on the offer!

The suspension isn't complex, but having someone who knows what they are doing with you the first time you jack it is priceless! :thumbsup

I wouldn't mind a hand, although I am sure with a bit of You Tube, and purchasing a trolley jack myself i could bodge it, enough to get it off the ground, take the wheel off, and take some photos....

:cheers

NOOOOO never jack an elise with a bottle jack. Until you know enough to know how you might be able to do it safely, at least.

Plus I doubt you'll get a bottle jack in.
A low entry jack is the best option but a normal floor jack will do.

The chassis needs protecting with either rubber or wood as the steel jack will damage it otherwise.

Dave,

I have a trolley jack you can use - happy to come across and give a hand if need be.

Mike.
