Tuition at KH - before or during trackday?

Post by mark_h » Thu Oct 07, 2010 12:18 pm

I'm looking seriously now at some trackdays (booked for Spa in November) and wanted to get thoughts on whether one of the Performance Driving Courses would be a suggested way of getting some tuition at Knockhill.

From reading some of the posts I see that there is often tuition available at KH trackdays - is this always the case or would it tend to be for something like SIDC events? Also, is it quite difficult getting a spot?

Thoughts/comments greatly appreicated.

Cheers

Mark

A few of us have done the KH course - it's not as good as a carlimits.com one for overall car control, but in terms of an intro to KH and what your car can do it's a great start.

If nothing else it means you probably wont be the slowest when you do an SIDC day, and it means any additonal training you do on that day will be even more worthwhile.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

thanks mate

I'll probably follow up with one of those training days at carlimits. The 10 mins to knockhill was handier/cheaper as an intro but suspect I'll want to learn/experience more.

Cheers

I'm off to KH tomorrow for their performance driving course (won it in a raffle :thumbsup ).
I'm really looking forward to it, having just started getting the trackday bug.

Update to follow...

Any tuition is worthwhile weather at KH for 10mins or car limits for a full day. At KH it might be more about how to peddle your car round the track quicker but will still teach you a lot about it's handling and feel. Definitely worth doing. :thumbsup

Had great fun yesterday.
The track was a bit greasy so got a few slides in (not always intentional, but good to find the limits).
The course was more about finding the correct lines, so wasn't blisteringly quick, but I felt I learnt a bit about how to tackle Duffus (or whatever it's called these days) and the chicane which was where I felt I had most difficulties.

It's a great feeling when you get the line right and realise how much more speed you can carry out the exit :thumbsup

If you're new to trackdays, I'd definitely recommend some sort of tuition. I've done a couple of days now and had some great tips from Mass and Robin, so even if you don't get professional lessons ask one of the more experienced guys to go out with you.

I wonder if you're on the same session as me, I'm 3 pm on Tuesday 12th October.
I've recently bought Kayfur's old 135R and he recommended I booked one of the performance driving sessions to learn how to handle the car properly.
Am actually a bit disappointed that it looks like its going to be dry since was really hoping to be given some instruction in a safe environment on how to handle the car when its wet!

Don't worry Brian, settle for dry initially, you will get plenty of wet when you do not want it.

Yeah Brian, I'm at 3pm Tues 12th too. I'll be the bespectacled guy in the grey exige trying to decide which pair of shoes to wear!

Duggie - glad you enjoyed it, bodes well for Brian and me.

Cheers

As an afterthought, is it worth dropping tyre pressures a little for the session or just leave it?

Cheers

I did this yesterday too. Found it very worthwhile. First time on the track so thought i'd get some tuition first. Funny, the guy I had said he was expecting another couple of Lotus later in the day, I was on at 12pm. I spun it off on the third, or so, lap. pic below, looks like i've taken it rallying
