Media Streaming (nlc)

Im looking for a device to stream media from a pc to a tv
I have looked at the apple one but I dont think it supports all media types
Has anyone got any pointers of one that will play most formats?
I used my ps3 before but its for my sisters xmas and dont think she would thank me for a ps3

Windows Media Player will provide basic streaming for free to get you started.

I have my eye on this, though, as I find the WMP pretty primitive when rendered by the TV end:

If you really want / need a physical device, the NetGear ReadyNAS duo has DLNA compliance as well as Squeezebox and iTunes server features built in (I believe). Has the bonus of enabling 2 HDDs to be mirrored in the box, holding all your media separately in a failsafe(ish) mode.

What you browsing it on? Seems fine to me - pretty good actually... Hey ho...

*edit - and we've had great reports of their cheaper product, the standard Xtreamer, which we've been selling for a while. And the early adopters who buy things like this are usually the first to moan if they're not A1 - So, I can't imagine the iXtreamer is going to be bad!

Still - lots of streamers out there, that's just a personal pick.

One of my colleagues has been researching this too, having had a Popcorn Hour for a couple of years until it died.

In the end he decided to go for an Acer Revo running Windows Media Centre. He might end up running something else on it, like XBMC or Boxee, but Media Centre is pretty good these days.

You can even use it as a straight PC, so you've got a web browser on the TV (not always great, but handy sometimes).

Another alternative would be an older AppleTV that's been unlocked and Boxee installed to make it more useful.

There's loads of other stuff about, but I'm guessing you (or your sis) don't want something that lists the content like //192.168.0.2/share/SomeFolder/Somefile.mp3 and requires a course in Linux to understand...

Haha. Techie rant at the fact that it's yet another company that fails to recognise that making your entire site in Flash is NOTAGOODIDEA.

Back on topic I've been looking for similar things recently and decided not to bother with a standalone device like the Popcorn Hour to display media on my TV. Instead I'm looking at a bluray player with good DLNA support like the LG BD570 and a QNAP TS-210 NAS to hold the media. Of course, you could keep the media on the PC and use WMP12, Mezzmo, Nero Home or another DLNA compliant server to service the player (the LG one comes with Nero Home as part of the package).

If she lacks a BluRay as well that could be a good solution - especially as the standalone players will be around the same price.

Currently loving boxee over popcorn and xbmc. I am running it on a dual core. Their standalone box was released today.

I've been using Boxee for ages and was losign faith that the box was coming. I'm going to have to think hard between BoxeeBox and Xtreamer. I really want a dedicated box for my streaming.

lol, the non-local grandparents are a bit of a tech wasteland. It would be nice, but I don't think I could handle the support involved each time it was switched on!
