Steering Rack Refurb
Steering Rack Refurb
I need to refurb the rack in my S1 Elise, so I'm just about to order the bits from Titan Motorsport.
They have a minimum order value which is greater than the cost of one set of bits, so was going to order at least two sets.
Does anyone have a need for the bits to refurb a rack? Happy to order more than I need to save on postage etc
If no-one on here needs the bits, I'll just order two sets and ebay the other set or post on SELOC.
Cheers

It's the same parts I'm sure tut, I have the Titan drawing on the pc, can check it later.
Re: Steering Rack Refurb
Pretty sure the bits I'm oredering will be the saqme - the nylon cups that the track rods seat into, plus shims, locking pins and boots.

Re: Steering Rack Refurb
i have a spare S1 rack for anybody that wants to minimise time off the road.
Re: Steering Rack Refurb
Do they do a kit with the upgraded bronze caps?
My rack is knocking a little and I was wondering whether it was worth getting the stronger parts. Is it an easy DIY job? Up until now I had only been looking at the exchange racks from Titan.

Re: Steering Rack Refurb
The job itself is easy enough, but getting the rack out can be a footer.
The drawing I have is RHD, but there's no reason for the parts replaced during overhaul to differ, I'd be sure thay'll do your rack Tut.
My car was on the original TREs, so I stuck a new pair on at the same time.
Don't think Titan do the bronze cups, it was a third party part IIRC.

Re: Steering Rack Refurb
i would take a kit, the VX needs done, and the S160 is not great either, how much are they Jamie?
I also have the brass inserts to replace the plastic ones if anyone needs them.

Re: Steering Rack Refurb
Careful fellas, Oracle Iddon advises me that the pre-loading required to set the rack up again properly before re-fitting is not to be under-estimated. I would want to understand this a lot better myself before committing to DIY...Ken Brown Motor Engineers in Glasgow will do the job for £100-£150 if you hand the rack in, I seem to recall.
HOWEVER, all that said, my rack was bad enough to confuse Walshy on the training day in Nov
so I do have this high on my list of "pre-season maintenance" tasks and so could be interested in a kit as well.

I borrowed a set of fish weighing scales from shuggles for the task, remember it being fairly straight forward. Unless of course I've fcuk up somewhere.campbell wrote:Careful fellas, Oracle Iddon advises me that the pre-loading required to set the rack up again properly before re-fitting is not to be under-estimated. I think the rack does, it's just everything else....
Re: Steering Rack Refurb
Aye - and they are available should anyone want to borrow them. Fairly simple task to set the preload using them.woody wrote:I borrowed a set of fish weighing scales from shuggles for the task, remember it being fairly straight forward. You simply tighten the end cups to a point that it takes a certain weight of pull on the scales to move the arms through an arc, then lock them off with a cotter pin. Pretty straightforward and even if the scales aren't minutely accurate, the test has a wide enough tolerance that it doesn't matter if it's a gram or two out, IMO.

Re: Steering Rack Refurb
Well. You got me thinking.
I never imagined I'd ever write something like this, but...anyone up for a Group Therapy Steering Rack Refurbishment Session some time in the next month or two?

Jamie - your 2nd order might be just around the corner
