Virus Help! NLC

Post by clareduncan » Wed Feb 02, 2011 4:03 pm

Hi,

I've had a bit of a hiccup with an exe file combined with a major blonde moment! I have since googled said website to discover it is indeed Malware. So far, no problems with the computer and none of the usual warning signs, but want to be safe before I start logging on to digi banking again.

When I googled the culprit (World of Books, except the URL is actually worid-of-books), someone recommended Malware Bytes as being one of the few that can identify the infected files. The reviews looked very promising but I just wondered if anyone had ever used it. The last thing I want is to download a dodgy anti-malware programme that is going to give me even more hell!!

Now that I am officially a Mrs (without the ring) SE'r, I feel slightly less guilty about bad using this forum for the techie advice! But hope no one minds!

Thanks!!

No-one minds Clare, this is a Community after all :-)

And anyway your thread is probably more grounded and relevant than a high percentage of all others ;-)

Our IT guys also use malwarebytes for corporate work, so another :thumbsup from here. Good luck.

This sorted my computer when I got some malware on it. Think I had to use another PC to download and then transfer by USB stick as it totally screwed any Web Browser I tried to use. Was a traumatic time!!

Effing twats.

Almost impossible to realise at first after googling and opening, as the correct URL is in the bar. On clicking on a book to buy, it automatically downloads a file which is a dead giveaway if you look at it first, ......pdf.exe. Unfortunately, as she said, she opened it so damage done, though at this stage I do not know exactly what. As per your answers, I also advised her to use Malwarebytes, then regardless of results, Microsoft malicious tool, uninstall the out of date NOD32, and install AVG free for the present.

Will see how she gets on with that lot. I was not impressed that all of my fully protected computers, including the new Macbook Air, allowed me to access the site without a red warning. It is a known malicious site. Also that it downloaded a very obvious scam file, though of course I did not open it.

Thanks gents! Malwarebytes installed and a full scan performed. Only two infected files found, whether they were anything to do with the site I don't know, but one of them was a trojan so very chuffed to have found it!

Thanks again!

Good news you found something.

I'd try and scan again with something else, maybe Spybot Search & Destroy as it's also pretty good. And then try an Antivirus program. I use Avast (the free one) as it has a Boot Scan function that scans before Windows starts. Some malware/bots etc. are difficult to catch while in use. I tend to use CNET for downloading stuff like this :thumbsup

Don't abandon ESET NOD32 out of hand though.

I have used NOD32 for ten years Campbell, bought through BCW for our computers so I used it as well. However we have grown considerably over the past five years so I have handed over to a full time staff and General Manager and all the training computers are now handled by two servers, so Virus protection is centralised.

The laptop that Clare was using has a version over two years old, so way out of date now and will not be getting renewed.
