Private plate change

Need some advice

Currently changing cars at the moment. Bought one last week, mini jcw. I then put my z4m up for sale and looks like it is about to be sold, guy booking his flight up on Monday. The BMW has a private plate on it that I'd like transfer to the mini but I don't have the v5 form back yet, only the part you get when you buy.

Do I have to put the plate on retention first or if go into the dvla office they will manage to sort the mess out.

Damn people buying my car too soon!!!!!

neh, you can get it transerred direct - go to your local DVLA office & one of the chappies there will furnish you with all the necessary paperwork, and all the info on what you need to do

Hi Chris,

You don't need the full v5, only the slip that you get when buying the new car. Walk into your local DVLA office, hand it all over and they will sort it out for you.

Only snag is you wont have a full v5 to give to the buyer of your old car, but you will have paperwork, receipts etc from the DVLA to prove it's legit.

It's not as simple as stated above.
DVLA now exercise the right to check every tenth car when you put a plate in retention or request a cherished transfer, so turning up at the local DVLA will not necessarily get the right outcome

I would download the retention document from the DVLA site and instruct your buyer you will be sending off all the docs to DVLA (photocopy V5 and MOT for file

If the buyer cannot wait 5 days ( average DVLA turnaround time)
Buyer takes the car on the understanding that the paperwork will follow and the car may have to return to DVLA office for inspection
Get buyer to sign a dated receipt/invoice for the car
Not ideal....but it works
Await V5 for new car and transfer plate with your retention certificate

I had exactly the same problem recently, motorhome sold within 12 hours of advertising it.
I explained the situation to the purchaser, allowed him to look over the paperwork and provided photocopies for him.

As H8OAG suggests, carefully word an invoice. I made it clear I was selling the motorhome with its original registration and retaining my cherished transfer number

I retained all the documents, allowed the purchaser to drive away with my cherished number on the vehicle and then headed into the DVLA office.

I collected the paperwork following 5 working days. This is where a further delay can be caused in your sale as you don’t get the V5 back, it comes from DVLA Swansea and can take a couple of weeks.


It all worked fine for me, I had trust in the purchaser and was not worried about him causing problems.

Correct way would be to get it on retention first.

I suppose it is a balance of probabilities, there is always the worry that something similar is advertised for sale and your purchaser walks away.

I wouldn't be letting anyone drive the car away down south as suggested above without getting the nod from the local DVLA office. If you've to phone the guy up a week down the line and ask him to take the car in for inspection then things could turn very messy.

Go to your local DVLA office, take all the paperwork, explain what you're trying to do. They are the experts, they will sort it out, guide you, advise you and keep you right. That's what you're paying them to do, and they're a helpful bunch in my experience

Sorry did not pick up on the fact that the car is going down south.
My purchaser was local so it was not going to be a problem for me to get the car into Edinburgh for an inspection if required.

Might be worth a try asking your local office if they can do a quick turnaround, you may get lucky if they are quiet.
You would still have the issue of no V5 to give to the new owner.

If it is going down south..........complete the paperwork
DVLA office will advise you not to sell without this being completed
Worst case scenario is that the new owner can apply for a new V5 on your cherished reg claiming it has been lost
