FFS taxi drivers - nudged me

Post by IanD » Sun Feb 27, 2011 6:08 pm

Wife was out in the Elise and a taxi ran into back of her at some traffic lights.
Wasnt a hard thump according to my wife.

I have had a check of clam and looks like it has hit above the number plate and there is a minor break. Looked in boot floor, across rear and edges of clam and don't see any other paint crack or damage.
No signs of damage on boot floor or rear but will give it a good clean next weekend and check out the paint.

Questions are
1. Is that space normally a cut out with nothing in it or has something dislodged/fallen out
2. Anywhere else i should check out closely for damage or transfer of the impact

Only got the car back yesterday after leaving it at MMC for a week to get a new set of tyres and geometry. :(

i think my elise had that gap, but obviously the little span across it has cracked.

Yes I think the square hole is supposed to be there - some sort of vent to pull moisture out of the boot, or pull heat off the heatshield or something like that.

Cheers,
Robin

Hi
Just had a look at my 2006 Elise and it is the same as yours, except I do not have the broken section.
Hope you resolve it quickly.

Keep an eye out for hairline cracks in the clam, they can sometimes take a while to appear.

I'd check the panel gaps, just in case the whole clam has moved.

Update
Just had a quick glance at the Elise as I was in the garage this morning - car not washed or anything yet.
Must be at least half a dozen fine crazing parallel lines appeared since i last looked, all a couple of feet long on the point that would be most stressed just above the number plate so guess it has cracked paint or something.

I'm not far from Hunter & Reid ( Strathaven) and see they have had a few good comments so will try and take it up there for an assessment.

I previously put a hole in the front after a motorway lane divider caught the front so maybe see about a price for that at the same time , and reduce the stone chips I have added in my few miles.

Only had the car 5 months and done 2000 miles, been a bit too much incident in that time !

Ian, I don't think they are in business anymore - there is a commercial vehicle sales place in the spot where they were. I haven't tried to contact them to see if they are operating ( there or any where else) but a shame if they are no more as they were really good. Let me know if you phone them and they do still exist.

The hole is there for drainage. There is meant to be a small hole in the boot lip directly above that with a cup underneath and a hose that leads out that hole. All cars should have had it removed though and the boot hole filled in under warranty because it causes paint blisters where the moisture collects in the cup.
