Was with BG up to earlier this year when I ended up not renewing the contract due to a big price hike. Bit like AA renewal, as when you phone them up they do reduce the monthly amount but not by enough for me to afford it. At the moment I'll just have to take the gamble without cover.

Definitely a difference in the service you get depending on the engineer that comes out. Some have been great and replace stuff without any bother, others do as little as possible and then you have to get another call out because the job was not done right.

In the past I have done quite a few jobs on my now 16 year old boiler including replacing thermocouples, a heat exchanger and a thermostat. Found the info online to do most of the work. Reckon if you can work on a car then many of the boiler jobs would be reasonably straightforward, though obviously there are some safety issue to take into concern

Now if anybody on here can do Boiler Work then I reckon I could point them in the direction of a couple of jobs, and would be nice to know if I have problems with mine.

Dom, the gas service in reality is just a safety check, hence it takes about 5 mins. Called BG out two weeks ago as there was a strong smell of gas coming out of my flue. The engineer came, replace the flue apparently sorting the issue and did the service. Later that night, the smell of the gas returned. 2 engineers and 3 days later it was all resolved, the boiler needed multiple parts replaced as the ignition system wasn't working hence it was priming, failing to spark and dumping gas out the flue, every 5 seconds. As a result I queried what the service actually was for!! Anyway, BG picked up the bill and due to the time taken even sourced some of the parts locally to get the system back up and running. Also I should say I did have a BG nugget working on the house replacing my cold water 100 gal tank. He didn't turn off the mains water, ruptured the inlet mains pipe in the loft and everything was history
