laser jammers
laser jammers
Wonder what your opinions are on laser jammers. I've got a road angel, but of course that's no use against a mobile van or hand held....it'll tell you when your being zapped but that's all...your speed is likely to have been recorded by then anyway.
The jammers seem to be in a grey area as far as the law goes.
"They will detect and jam the signal so the laser gun can't get a reading. This gives you some time usually around 8 seconds to check and reduce your speed if necessary. They are not illegal to have on the car or even to transmit infra red from the car, however it is illegal to obstruct a Police officer in his duty and that is if they can prove 'primary intent'. It's extremely difficult for them as they can be shown to be a parking sensor."
there seems to be heaps of manufacturers/models around, and I haven't a clue whether or not they do as they say.
Opinions?

Re: laser jammers
I would change your post title to 'Garage door openers' as if you are caught with one the evidence of how you were using it is out there on t'internet. ( unless youre asking on behalf of someone
)
I think potentially they can get you into much more bother than a speeding fine.
And there is no grey area, they are illegal if proved to be used for that purpose.

Re: laser jammers
If you get caught you will get done, can't remember what it is exactly they charge you with but they do. I think someone got done a few years ago with an automatic garage door opener.
The simple answer is don't speed but since we all do don't go mental.

I guess either Obstruction or Perverting the cause of Justice. -You are preventing a Police Officer in execution of his duties (i.e. detecting speeding) , or using illegal equipment to prevent prosecutionBiggestNizzy wrote: can't remember what it is exactly they charge you with .

Re: laser jammers
There is legislation that covers it specifically....
Re: laser jammers
Jaming is of course illegal, but where are we with detection? Can you get additional modules for the road angel to add that additional coverage?
There was a wired in solution I saw a while back that seemed pretty good, can't remember its name. Everytime I look though, the technology doesn't appear to have got much better over 20 odd years. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

Re: laser jammers
So they are illegal and governed seperately but do you just get a fine and no points? I think thats what would matter, difference between losing license and just forking out the cash is what I would look at. Not that I would expect to travel in excess of 100 and get away with it but if you were sitting on 9pnt's and were caught at 75 in a 60 then this would save your license?

Re: laser jammers
I'd have thought that a guy standing with a laser gun has to like use a trigger or something to activate it, so by the time your device starts flashing / beeping at you, you've probably already been done, in which case... You'll get a letter in the post a few days later, that'll help you detect that you've been caughtFerg wrote:Jaming is of course illegal, but where are we with detection?

Re: laser jammers
Simples; if you don't want to get done for speeding, don't speed.
....or at least don't speed where you are going to get caught.

Re: laser jammers
It used to be the case that these things would fire back interference, confusing the gun and making it display an error. Now, I suspect that the guns have either got cleverer and can indicate they are receiving multiple returns, or at the very least, Mr Plod will flag you down anyway on an error reading and take a very close look behind your grill. They've been in circulation too long and too well known for you to be able to get away with them any more.
Interested what the penalty would be - I think an intention to deceive would probably carry a stiffer penalty than simple speeding, if the lawmakers wanted to be serious about it?

If its a simple radar return just throw lots of chaff (strips of bacofoil will do), this will disperse the signal (think military aircraft here), should also work on laser beams too. Not too sure what tech they use now.
Simples just lose your front plate and if stopped you were out getting a new one!

Re: laser jammers
What's your front plate got to do with it? Sure, they usually use that to bounce off, but I'm sure they could use a headlight or something instead and when they pull you over, you have a speeding fine and a producer for no numberplate.vx220 wrote:If its a simple radar return just throw lots of chaff (strips of bacofoil will do), this will disperse the signal (think military aircraft here), should also work on laser beams too. I'd love to see how you'd fire bacofoil out the front of your car if doing illegal speeds as well...

Re: laser jammers
If no front number plate then a bit hard for a fixed camera to stop you and do you, only a mobile unit could.
Forward firing chaff dispenser - where theres a will theres a way! You just need to be more open to suggestion Shug!!

Re: laser jammers
Is this why people use to put cd's behind their front number plates with just the top & bottom of the CD showing?
