Alternator belt squeel

Post by BiggestNizzy » Tue Jul 05, 2011 12:37 pm

This mornig my alternator started to squeel and I got a nice rubber burning smell before it stopped.

Before I go get a new belt could it be anything else ?

The starter took a few seconds to kick in but everything seems fine otherwise.

The belt will be loose.

The belt will be loose because the lower mounting bolt on the bracket has sheared off in the block.

It's a barsteward to fix.

Cheers,
Robin

Jamie Ralph can give advice, he had to do his a few weeks ago with advice from Robin, and bought the tools needed, ie a right angle drill if needed to get the bolt out if it has sheared.

He had an argument with the AA as they said that it was not covered by P&L, though it seems a pretty clear mechanical fault to me when the bolt has sheared off. They would not have got off that easily with me.

Nizzy, pop round to mine with it if you want, have became quite familiar with the alt. assembly over the years.

Fingers crossed it is something simple ... the bolt shearing is worst case scenario :-(

Stuck my hand in from the top the the alternator rocks a little and the belt is slack. Putting my hand in further I can find a bolt that is loose and poking out about 10mm I can't pull it out or tighten/loosen it.

FYI Nizzy, Parts and labour are refusing to pay out on my claim due to the failure of the engine mount being caused by a bolt shearing 1st.

They've stated that bolts aren't covered in the policy so if the bolt fails first, nothing else from that point on is covered!!! Ffs! They're also stating that there is nothing wrong with my engine mount, despite the fact it's no longer mounting the engine to the chassis!!! Arses!!

Complaints have been made in writing to the management. They've promised to respond within 8 weeks!
