Watch lovers?
Re: Watch lovers?
Scotty, we have the crown at home, but could not find who it belonged to. Thought it must be off a pikey watch as opposed to one of your mega jobs.

Re: Watch lovers?
No guru just my opinion - some Chopard I like, some are just too fashionable . Like the MMs with tyre tread strap, they are not timeless and will date badly i think. Whereas the old boy has a 90s Mille Miglia when they made them in a classic style and it's a lovely watch.

It was the monaco historique i liked with the orange stitching and detail. I am not see keen on the rubber strap versions and the big numbers on the face.
Just mulling at the moment, wanted something non-mainstream. Will keep pondering.
G, budget is significantly less than i would want to spend.....

Re: Watch lovers?
Im a big fan of some of the mille miglia watches, the 2011 range is a bit iffy mind you

Chopard? Yeh or nay. I like the look, but are they a sought after, quality watch?

Re: Watch lovers?
I like them
In terms of being timeless, I don't think they tick that box. The following is all personal, but I put them in the Bell & Ross and Bremont camp - quirky for the moment but not likely to be much sought after in the future.
If you say you don't want to be mainstream, how about a non-mainstream model from a mainstream manufacturer, e.g.:-
Rolex - Vintage GMT (coke bezel)
or
black bezel (me likey)
Explorer 2 (they come in black or white dials)?

From the Brietling stable, a B1
,
or a Navitimer?

Sorry - run out of enthusiasm for posting pics
Omega .. Railmaster or a de-ville?
If you post up requirements (e.g. must haves: chrono? Bracelet/strap? Date? Rotating bezel? Auto/quartz/hand-wound only?) then perhaps I can give it some more thought

http://www.blowers-jewellers.co.uk/Chop ... _W3817.htm is that the one? Still a pretty weighty budget you've got as they are coming in at £3500 for a new one on that blowers link.
I think if I had £3k to spend I would look at a Superocean Heritage or a PAM48 or 104.

Re: Watch lovers?
Thats the one JJ. I liked many things about its looks, just not sold on the brand for the rather big price.
Still a bit of pondering needed. The superocean is the only breitling i like and i tried one on but it wasnt for me.
Greg, some lovelt watches. I have tried a gmt on before and i know they are a totally different watch to the seamaster, its too similar, i.e bracelet and rotating dial for the money,
Criteria. Hmm, ok, black face preferred, leather or rubber strap, not a bracelet. Auto movement preferred, chrono good, but not essential.
Its not an impulse buy, so i have plenty time.
ps any feedback on laings jeweller in edinburgh?

Re: Watch lovers?
For £3k, can't go wrong with a Rolex although...If you buy a Deepsea I'll kick you in the nuts! Showed one to Emily.."it's a bigger version of your Sub." Oh it's not Emily....
For £3kish...

I'm tempted to sell my Pam 104 for a Submersible...
Basically...my £3k would be going on a Panerai!

Re: Watch lovers?
Love the Navitimer.
So many rings and numbers on it that you can barely read the time.

Re: Watch lovers?
First of all - Laings are basically a big nationwide dealer, think like a big car franchise. I've had great customer service from the (they re-sized the bracelet on my Mrs's Omega which I hadn't bought from there, and they straightened the bent clasp on my sub - both F.O.C) but some of the staff are a bit sleezy greasy types. Some aren't it has to be said. Difficult to describe, but its not somewhere I'd chose to spend my wad, rather a place I'd go to try something on to see if I liked it before buying elsewhere!dlogan wrote:

I think I get what you're after - something completely different to justify owning the two watches. I'm a huge fan of Zenith watches, a lesser-known swiss company that until (I think) 2007 supplied Rolex with the movement used in the Daytona, the El Primero.
If I hadn't just bought the GMT2c, I'd be all over this like a tramp on chips:-

Display back, too. Be.e.e.eautiful

Elephant in the room time, what size are you looking for? The Chopards are quite bulky yet the Zenith is pretty slim n comparison - that one's a 40mm dial. At £1,800 (used) I think its an absolute bargain.
Anyhow, half of the fun is in the looking. If you want super service closer to Aberdeen, try Walker the Jeweller in Dundee - Ask for Derek. He'll see you right

Have fun!

Re: Watch lovers?
Ooooh, that is a lovely lovely watch. Class......literally.
Where would i find A used one ? Is that specific one for sale?
Cheers for the Laings info. Might go nosey next time in Edi.

Re: Watch lovers?
Good place for a nosey. Hamilton & Inches on George St is also a good bet, but it is very snooty. You could also pop into Watches of Switzerland on Princess Street too
That particular watch was for sale on another forum I frequent, but I think it has been withdrawn. I'll send the chap a message to see if it can be back up for sale

Re: Watch lovers?
I have yet to go into a watch retailer down here who has been anything other than hugely helpful - especially the big places like Harrods and Selfridges. Last time I went in for a nosey a couple of weeks ago, the guy was genuinely a good lad, pulled out a couple of things to try on even although I had already told him I couldnt give him change of a fiver and was not watch shopping
Might be worth tying it in with a trip south?
