Stupid question... and no I am not female ;)
Re: Stupid question... and no I am not female ;)
Is this a VVC engine? It appears to have oil cooler take off pipes fitted. If you don't know for sure, take a picture of the engine bay from the top ...

It is mate - he's previously posted some issues WRT VVC ECU replacement.robin wrote:Is this a VVC engine? It appears to have oil cooler take off pipes fitted. If you don't know for sure, take a picture of the engine bay from the top ...

OK, so then I wonder if there might be an issue with the VVC oil cooler pipe work - these do break (although I'm not sure if they break when provoked by ham fisted mechanics or whether they fail in service). A broken VVC oil cooler pipe might lead to some intermittent loss of oil pressure I suppose ... not sure if they are always in circuit or only when oil is too hot/too cold.

Pull the connector and ground the wire and the light should come on, then wiggle the wiring see if the light flickers.
Edit oops to late...

Can anyone advise what's involved in changing the oil pressure switch - can you just pull it out and get the new one in quickly without losing too much oil, or does it need to be drained? Mine apparently has a small leak from it (and I also get an occasional random flickering of the warning light.)
Izi.., where did you purchase the new one from?
BTW, on your original point, I have the same issues reading my oil level. The XXX's on the stick will have some oil over them, although it usually looks heavier at the bottom of the gauge that the top, so I can never tell if it needs topped up.
Robin, re oil cooler pipes on the VVC - mine corroded quite early in the car's life, I think around a point where they're held by a clamping plate.

Just change it quick, pop your thumb over the hole and you won't loose much but cardboard is a good idea!
It'll be a rover part so should be easily available fomr your local motor factor.

Yup autosave 7.99 - cheap as chips. Two day delivery though
Will be firing it in ASAP with the thumb technique above .. Oh and cardboard this time

Re: Stupid question... and no I am not female ;)
I personally wouldn't drive it until I got to the bottom of the flikering oil-light issue. If the oil light is genuinely indicating low oil pressure, you WILL damage the engine.
Re: Stupid question... and no I am not female ;)
IIRC the low oil pressure warning light on the VVC is set at 15psi. There could be a number of reasons for this ranging from a generally worn engine to clogged oil pick up and anything in between. Once you have ruled out the pressure switch and the problem still persists then thing get considerably more complicated. Hopefully, for your sake it will be the switch that's gubbed.
Just realised your in Aberdeen, if you want a hand then PM me your number. Might be a bit late but pretty sure I have a spare pressure switch knocking around.

Re: Stupid question... and no I am not female ;)
Ok so after a week away, I finally got round to fitting the new sensor. Quick trip to aberdoom and back and no light "yet".... Will do a few more miles and see how it goes.
However?! I was putting the under tray back on and in my haste to get it finished whilst trying to get the axle stands in place I tripped over the trolley jack... Hey fcuk presto the thing slipped and i now have a round hole on the side of the car ... I am so sick with myself! Anyone know where to get this thing fixed??? In or around aberdoom!!!
Thanks
Izi

Castlepark autobody in Ellon. Many on here used them and top workmanship.
Thats bad luck - I'm always paranoid about jacking it up for exactly this reason. Glad the sensor worked though.
Chin up.
