Uphill Downsouth

Post by fd » Wed Aug 10, 2011 12:24 am

Was down at the Harewood Hillclimb last weekend, near Leeds.

Lovely hill and a well run event, not much further for me than Golspie (about 4.5 hours towing), and a new venue to play at . . .

Managed to see off a number of our southern friends in class and some Scottish competition also and got 3rd in class both days . . . confidence in the car is growing and what with a mix of dry and wet runs I'm starting to become more comfortable with the car and it's behaviour . . . still, managed to spin it on the first run, and remove part of the underfloor the next day on a kerb (these single seaters are a little delicate to say the least) . . . but as it's all just marine ply it's simple to repair . . .

Anyways . . . not far, at all, behind the experienced locals . . . that last corner is difficult and
this was as good as I did all weekend, very high entry speed and continually tightening . . . you kinda just have to let the car bleed off speed and hope for the best . . . great fun . . . and more to come . . . as ever . . .

Neat. Think I see what you mean about the last corner - rather you than me :-)

Is Nicky still competing?

Passed Harewood on way home from Donnie a few years back, shortly after which I got snowed on as I drove over the Dales. Lawrence spoke fondly of the place, I seem to recall :-) Have also been realising just how important, and widespread, the hillclimb events were in the formative years of Sir Jackie Stewart - reading his book just now. He's been talking about the Bo'ness one, which of course is recently resurrected just over the hill from our house.

Awesome FD, love following your exploits. :)

It does look an interesting venue, the blast through the farm steading looks amazing on video (Fintray cow shed x10). ;)
I'd imagine the corners generate more adrenaline though... :D

I did Harewood three times in 2009 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The first part of the course is downhill and twisty (and tricky as a result). The last corner is very difficult to get right and I've seen a few nasty prangs there. I had planned on doing the double header there in September (same as Doune weekend) but finances are looking tight so I probably won't make it. I did get down to spectate in July though so I've had some of the fix.

What's your next event FD ?
