Happy to do either, but road / cycling path cycling has improved my fitness no end.......and i actually really enjoy it now.
+1

Been off the bike for too long lately though, will be a tough reintroduction when that finally happens. Setting up the turbo trainer this weekend.

Good effort K, set a target and do it for charity if you want to make yourself stick to it.

Forgot to mention the important part that fruit plays Kenny, get a variety in, low on calories, and when you feel like one of your old snacks, bite into a nice, crisp, juicy apple.

We get all our fruit, veg, dog food, free range eggs etc, from our local farm shop in Maud, better quality and a lot cheaper than the SM. Bought a bag of ten of my favourite apples yesterday for £1.

As someone that does cutting and bulking cycles as part of my training, my advice echoes others...

1 - Little by little, each week improve something rather than jumping in, getting fed up and breaking it

2 - Measurements! When living healthier and starting exercise some weeks weight won't change and it hits motivation, by taking a few basic measurements like waist, chest and quads, it helps highlight progress other than that shown on the scales

3 - Factor in "treats", my saturday night takeaway keeps me motivated when I've not had carbs for 6 days as I've got it to look forward to. As it's planned and factored in there is none of the guilt or feeling like you may as well give up after a tasty meal!

4 - Lastly, sugar free jelly! Mainly as I love sweets and chocolate, plus the mrs has a dessert pretty much every night, some sugar free jelly helps hit the craving and it's nigh on calorie free!

All the best and stick at it, sounds like you've set realistic goals and sustainable plans to achieve them.

Wanting to do it is the first step but continued motivation is vital.
As previously said, getting together with groups of friends helps as you'd be letting them down.

A team sport can be another motivator, personally I find it much easier to chase a ball around etc. rather than say just running. Also can give a great long term goal, need to be fit otherwise letting down mates, team...Country. :)

Forgot that after being off the saddle for a while you have to break your arse in again, it hurts.

Half day on fridays so had a quick sprint home, into the headwind, suppose that helps in the long run  to catch end of free practice 1. Out to the shops later before doing some weights during free practice 2. Multitasking.

Interesting about allowing the occasional treats, apart from crisps I dont really eat any other snack, trying to avoid them altogether as I am a crispoholic can't just have one pack.
Suppose that just leaves maybe an odd beer or glass of wine at weekend. Will see.

Kenny if you get the chance to watch this "Sugar - The Bitter Truth" it is very eye opening.

Watch on YouTube

Basically it comes to the fact that Sugar or Fructose more to the point is a poison and it is this that is causing alot of obesity thoughout the world. In the states they add Fructose to baby formula and as aresult they have a big problem with obese 6 month olds, that's just wrong!! It's not as dull as it sounds honest. There was a british scientist who wrote a book in the 70's I think, called "Pure, White and Deadly" and although I haven't read it he actually predicts alot of the health issues we have. It's not just about the calories but what those calories are. 100kcals of Fructose is much worse than 100kcals of Glucose for example.....

I've been getting back into running recently and watching what I eat as I want to lose some fat too. That Brit Military Fitness looks brilliant although I quite like being able to take the dog along too, she came on a 10k with me during the week. It was an easy one along the canal in the dark but I really enjoyed it. Would like to try a triathlon I think but that may be some time.

Pizza is not all bad if you make your own from scratch, dough, sauce and all, and don't add any sugar which is added as a preservative most of the time. It's fast food in general that is bad.

i use http://www.endomondo.com/home to keep track of my exercise. Donkey, ddtb, dom and a few others all use it too. I find its a great way of motivating me to try to beat a previous target. What it's shown me is that i do a sh*t load of walking and burning calories, and yet i'm still a fatty. Turns out a 2L bottle of irn bru has 800 calories in it, and i have one of them a day, so i probably need to ditch the juice and just keep the exercise the same to lose weight

I love the fact that you've only just worked this out. It's actually made my afternoon. Who knew etc etc

I can imagine a whole new spin off thread. Healthy eating advice from the ginger ape.

Episode 1 - My god have you seen how many calories are in a kebab?

Episode 2 - The hidden danger of irn bru with a dairy milk chaser

Episode 3 - What is that green stuff i keep seeing in the supermarket and should i buy it?

Repeat until funny*

Cutting out the crap from your diet is the best place to start. Just remove all temptations from the cupboards then its easy. If you're peckish a bowl of cereal will fill you up. Drink lots of water, the flavoured stuff will do if you find plain too bland. I drink 1.5 litres every day without fail, think of the calories you'll burn running back and forward to the toilet too  I don't follow any type of diet, I just don't eat sugary/fatty crap, works fine for me. As others have said don't overdo the exercise at first or you'll put yourself off for good, build up gradually. Road cycling is my thing, nothing burns calories like pounding out several hours on the bike, just think how good you'll look in lycra once the pounds are shed  Watch out with running, no point knackering your knees, take it easy on soft ground if possible. Just find something you enjoy doing, there are no hard and fast rules, brisk walking is a good way to start. Good luck anyway, you will feel good once you know you're in control of your weight/fitness and not the other way around.
