Car not taxed.....fine?

Post by DJ » Sun Dec 11, 2011 7:56 pm

Walked past the Kuga on the drive this morning and noticed the tax ran out on 30.9.11.

Dont seem to have received the annual reminder and a quick check on govt website does show it as unlicensed :? Anyone been in this situation before? Indicates an automatic £80 fine :( . Expecting to have to pay tax from 1.10.11 which I have no issue with at all, but wondered if on-line or going to a PO would be best (no one like paying govt fines!) Thinking the fine will be highlighted either way as guess the whole purpose of SORN was to pick up on people who were intentionally avoiding this tax. Looking to sort this out tomorrow obviously.

not much help but I had the same last time and as long as you back date the tax you will most likely be okay, at least I was.

I got a letter saying they may investigate and I risked getting a fine but heard no more.

That's the sort of outcome I'm looking for. Was that on-line or at the Post Office?

I think the fine for not displaying vaild tax is £60 plus any backdated tax due.

I bought a car with the tax disc for another car on it  (Didnt know at this time) and when i realised i went to the DVLA office in Edinburgh and they said it should be fine as long as i buy tax ofr the car and pay the backdated tax, never heard anymore about it :thumbsup

I think I would come under this rule http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ow ... DG_4022059 which looks like £80. It's the automatic bit I'm unsure of and if it will kick in as soon as I try to by tax - even if backdated.

Looks like only applies if you get stopped. Guess buying at post office in the morning would avoid that.

It is automated, but seems to take a long time for them to catch up with you.

I got the £80 fine through a couple of months ago, hadn't a clue why, as the Elise was SORN'd and the Caterham taxed, both in Northern Ireland, so I figured it was an error with the DVLA.

However, it turns out that the SORN on the Caterham expired mid 2009 and I didn't re-SORN it until early 2010.

The first thing I knew about it was a Debt Collection Agency, asking for me to confirm my details..which I didn't.
Then a letter saying I owed them £80, with a reference of the car's number plate.
Then it was only through a series of investigative phone calls to the DVLA that I actually discovered what I was being fined for. They were not very forthcoming with details.

I wasn't required to pay any back-dated tax though, perhaps because the car was garaged throughout.

Nuts! My wife just taxed her car on Saturday which expired at the end of November. Could be an expensive 10 days! :(

The SORN on my Lotus ran out and i forgot to do anything about it. About 4 months later i got a notice saying that they would fine me £80 but that they'd cut it to £30 if i paid and SORN'd within 10 days. I paid and SORN'd so all was well.

I’d just tax it at the post office and see what happens. Not much you can do about it anyway.

Done this today after forgetting the V5 yesterday . So I have a 2 month period when the car was both untaxed an not SORN'd. Post Office guy reckons I'll hear from DVLA in due course to ask what happened in that 2 month period along with a fine. Will post up in due course when/if I hear anything.

Improving the regulation surrounding the notification process for vehicles that are not in use on the road (Statutory Off Road Notification or SORN). Once drivers have notified the DVLA that their vehicle is SORN, they will no longer have the burden of annual SORN renewal.
Wish they had brought this in earlier, would have saved me £80.
