ok, so I was a wee bit out with the age of the car, it is a 2002 52 plate, I'm guessing that wont make much of a difference, maybe an extra £300/£400?

Personally I'd buy a different car - that mark of golf is the least loved iteration and will be a pig to sell when the weather heats up. sorry.

Mk3's were ghastly, ghastly golfs.

I had a mk4 VR6 in Montreal, and it was a great car. SO much better made than the Mk3 - drove one of those mongrel Vr6's also :roll:

Rather than an R32? ;) :ROFL

I had a mk3 1.9D, it was indestructible. I think mk3s pretty much define "dull but worthy".

I kinda figured it was all about the reputation it got for being a little screwed over rather than being a particularly bad car..
They seriously screwed up the GTi, especially in the UK with the 110 or so hp 2 litre that was badged an SE or something in Europe.
Then there was another with 125hp or something, then the 'proper' GTI only made 150hp (rarer anniversary model excluded) when the prettier (IMO) Leon Cupra like mine made 180..

The mk3 golf was hideous..

It was really the GTis I was referring to. When I say that they were not the best, what I was meaning, was they were not VW's finest hour; still far better than much of the opposition!

The MkIV Golf handled appalingly but to say it is the least loved itteration is utter nonsense.

The interior was streets ahead of all of it's rivals and to be honest was on a par with the E46 BMW which was launched at the same time. It became the benchmark for all other hatchbacks but even the mkV and mkVI Golf still feel a bit cheap in comparison as VW cut costs a bit on the interior to focus on the driving dynamics.

The classy feel of the cockpit means they are still very much in demand as a used car and much loved by the general public who don't care quite as much as us about how it feels when you throw it down a back road.

Just compare the used prices of an '02 Golf to an '02 Astra or Focus to see how well loved they are. They cost more or less the same brand new.

You might well struggle to sell it on but it will be because it's got a 2.8 litre engine, not because it's a mkIV Golf.

Mk4s are great, just not a "drivers" car. VW UK screwed up badly by badging the 2.0 115bhp Highline (as it was called in mainland Europe) as a GTi here - that badge should have only been on the 1.8T (which was a pretty good car, especially with the sports suspension and Recaro seats). Thankfully they seemed to have learned from that mistake..

The image counts for a lot too, Golfs are one of the few "classless" cars available.

My mum has a 2002 GT TDi 130 she's owned from new, it still drives brilliantly (by that I mean solid and secure) today and has a surprising turn of speed. Feels absolutely great on the motorway, more so than a lot of much newer "better" cars I've driven since.
