Lotus Carlton...

Post by Rich H » Wed Sep 06, 2006 10:57 am

Morning all,

Quick question for you Lotus geeks, is there a foolproof way of identifying a Lotus Carlton? The guy who has just moved in 2 doors down from the g/f has what looks like a Lotus Carlton, but I'm not 100% having never seen a genuine one.

It's in what looks like a very dark brown and has turbo written all over it. Couldn't see the front end.

I want to know if it's a real one before looking like a twat infront of a new neighbor...

There is a nearly new Mustang GT convertible round the corner too, I'm going to see if he'll swap with mine for a day, or the Carlotn will do if it's real....:D

Could have been black but I was convinced it wasn't quite, it was raining though. Could have been grimey I suppose.

lol G, common misconception #1!!

They were all 'imperial green', a dark metallic green.

Rich:-

Check the chassis number starts with SCC000019 and check that there is a Limited Edition badge on the passenger glove-box, and that it shows the cars construction number. Valid construction numbers are 0001 to 0950 :)

Original run was 1100, but they couldn't sell the last 150 in the recession (list was £48k!)

Drive behind him and try to keep up.

Alloys were quite specific were they not ?

Best bet would be to check if it actually runs !

I knew you lot would know, I'll check the dash out next time. I don't think he'll be overly impressed with:
"can I check the chassis number on you car before I talk to you about cars?"

Thanks guys!

no worries mate - externally, wheels are 17s, and should be shod with 235/45 ZR17s (f) and 265/40 ZR 17s :)

More obviously, the body kit was specific to the car as well. Standard Carltons had that flat-topped rear arch, where the big arches on the Lotus cars were wheel-hugging. Lotus badge on the front and rear too...

That said, I daresay a couple of sad twats would have kitted standard carltons... Bast bet - lift the bonnet and look for the big red chargecoolers 8)

If the guy comes out of his house wearing a burberry cap then it's probably a replica.

Would a ned/chav know what a Lotus Carlton was?

She does live the other side of a manky estate but the bit she lives in is ok. The neds don't cross the river. Drove in the other week and there are a host of Vicky Pollards at the bus stop along with a kappa tracksuited yob with a burberry cap...
