I see what you mean. Could be interesting if the belt slips. I read a post by Kiwirog saying he was trying to get a batch made up to the correct hardness but the supplier was asking for a massive order to take it on.

I have the type that Simon has posted in his picture on 2 engines, both look like that, but am still using them anyway.

Big big thanks to everyone who helped with parts and advice.
New head is on and everything has went swimmingly.
Car is running better than ever and I am chuffed to bits.
Here's a wee pic of me and cheeze trying to hardness test my old head.
He nobbled it from work. I have no idea if we are using it right. It would suggest this head is fine - but I would nearly bet a right bollock it ain't.
Good fun though if sciency stuff is your bag. Testing everything in sight. Looks like a piece of A4 is the same as this head. Go figure.

I don't know much about hardness testing, but am assuming that's a rebound tester? Assuming it is then I have a guess it won't deliver sane readings on easily compressible/elastic materials like paper. The rebound tester measures the energy loss on rebound - so you drop a small probe through a tube onto the test surface, the probe speed is measured on the way down and then again on the way back up at the same point. The harder the surface the less energy is lost in the collision. However elastic surfaces can confuse it into thinking they are hard when in fact they compress and then rebound; the energy is stored in the compression phase and then returned to the probe in the rebound phase. Metals tend not to be elastic - you put a dent in and it stays there - energy is lost in deforming the material.
Provided you got sane results when measuring the head, I would ignore the paper results myself.

When I used the hand held probe I could get it to repeat fine. However when it was correlated with the bench tester and the readings checked, it was miles out.
How does the car feel with that head? Any noticeable difference in feel/power?

Robin is absolutely right, the head must be stripped [testing with the cam carrier will give false readings] and on a hard absolutely flat surface, otherwise you will get incorrect readings.

We were really just having a play with it. You have to set it up four the material type. We figured this out after a wee while.
We were also just doing it on a table with cardboard in between it so the results would have been will off. It'll get another try later.
Woody - I'm very very happy with it. Revs higher and quicker. Feels a lot more torquey (spelling?). I didn't go with the cams just now because of the additional expense of the ecu. They will either be kept for this engine later or the same engine type in another shaped car.
At the moment I'm now helping Cheeze take his head off. A lot harder without Alans help.

correct hardness???
the choice is cheap H30
or [slightly] more expensive 7075 Dural which is T6 [heat treated - like a K series engine!] and hard anodised
the difference is..... max profit ....or .... fit for purpose...
