Ambulances blocking the road

Post by graeme » Sun Mar 04, 2012 9:33 pm

Clearly a long term SEer from the post contents. Either a non-contributing lurker, or most likely somebody without the balls to post from their main account. Either way, not somebody whose opinion is worth a damned thing.

We did not think it was Gareth.

Think you would just come out with it.

Quite amazed by this thread but the direction it has eventually gone in shows the true spirit of SE.

Sorry, should clarify.

Although there have been fairly heated exchanges in this thread the parties involved have all calmed down and resolved the situation like adults. Something that rarely happens on SELOC. Although there are a few interesting characters on here, they are generally slightly further along the evolutionary scale than the average SELOC member. IMHO

Is that perhaps partly due to the majority of member being more likely to meet face to face?

I still post only stuff I'd say to someone's face, best rule of being nice like wot I is :damnfunny

Well said Dan - well, once you'd clarified it ;)

Nice to see this thread go full circle and back to normal (although I missed the pimpernel saga - presumably a mod checking IP addresses would show if it's an existing member, though I can't remember if there is a rule against multiple accounts on here)

I suppose as an online community, we should expect some domestics now and again.
Face to face, there would probably be ASBOs handed out, and strangers listening in to our conversations (lurkers) along with some people wearing masks to disguise who they are (multi accounts) :blackeye

I missed the pimpernel incident too but guess it could have been just an unkown trolling. Best not to think about it.

In real life we meet new people, make a judgement on whether we'll get on ok, and if not then we probably won't spend much time conversing with them after that. We stick closely to the few folk we have the most common ground with, so extreme differences of opinion rarely occur, and when they do you at least know the other person well enough to form some context around their views.

On an internet forum you don't have that luxury. If you want to hang out with SE you have to hang out with *all* of SE. Hundreds of active members. Far bigger than any social group we would comfortably form in real life. We're a small-tribe species. There's was no strength in numbers for our ancestors, like wildebeest. We had no natural predators. Small groups are easy to house, feed and relocate. It's also in our instinct to squash any behaviour we think doesn't fit with our small tribe. If somebody in the tribe says something you don't like, one of you is definitely leaving, until all that remains is a small group who all agree. It's easy for a small group to all hold the same views, but it doesn't work when we try to apply the same behaviour to a larger group like SE.

There's no way anyone can be expected to enjoy the company of absolutely every other SE member, but there's no way to filter out the noise or form smaller groups like we do in real life (why high-school was so cliquey, and why religions have so many denominations).

Hence the occasional difference of opinion in the open forum. Add in some red wine, testosterone poisoning, football/religion and a bit of politics and it's a testament to all members (and mods!) that the whole place didn't turn into a mosh pit years ago...

TL;DR: Forums are unnatural. It's not our fault. :)
