Dave,

If you want al-fresco motoring then this looks pretty unique:

Phil Raby used to be the editor of "Total 911" magazine so he definitely knows his porkers.

If it's outlandish that you are looking for then this is probably the ultimate:

I just hope that this is not an 90's fashion that comes into vogue anytime soon.

You suggested a Cayman so guessing 2 seats ain't an issue.

The Cayman as mentioned above is IMO easily the best, I'd change mine for a 911 but ONLY a GT3 (RS), I definitely think it is that good, maybe a Cayman R though.......

It is a basic spec S, sport shift, 18" S alloys, cruise and a couple of minor options but I wouldn't care for much else. As a high days and holidays car it is sublime and everyday useable, if it wasn't for cross town commutes, manageable but not fun, heavy clutch and thirsty but actually as supple as my Fabia vRS (I put a Skoda reference in for Campbell). Just had a weeks holiday up north and never wanted for anything faster or more agile.

A Boxster is easily as good but I didn't want a convertible on my drive, don't discount one though, drive both and decide for yourself, the roof is fantastic. I drove a 997C2S and wasn't impressed and other than stacking the cabin won't take a weeks luggage like the Cayman/Boxster.

Old 911 are great but an acquired taste, Cayman all the way for me just wish they didn't depreciate as they do......
if evolution don't take care of it, redesign it

Nobody has mentioned a 968 which most of them fall under the lower limit.

Here's one has minimal miles :

Very different but lots of performance probably to be had:

Even has a stripe especially for Dave

Exactly why I chose it. The modern porkers are so good you have to be going at extreme speeds to feel like you are pushing anything close to the performance envelope. The older stuff make you feel like you are driving it :thumbsup

Sorry for being pedantic but depends which one you are talking about:

The RS60 Spyder can be had for under £30k http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3908210.htm but the newer version with the Elise type roof is closer to £40k http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3919485.htm.

It was the newer one I was meaning. I'm sure Dave's not that bothered about actually sticking to his budget

Thought it was :thumbsup.

Managed to finally see one in the flesh whilst we were done in South Quensferry on Centenary day. It does look very nice in white 8)

However there is also the Design Edition 2 which is rather tasty (and very elise esque in graphics) although lose the side stripes.

The Cayman Design Edition 1 is also rather tasty in the black but also came with the silly side stripes.

I sold my C2S on Saturday for 25k. Picked the buyer up in dunfermline after the trackday, took him to see it and he left happy as a pig in the proverbial.

It was a genuinely good car, but i really really didn't like it.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3954592.htm

But it can be done for 25k. ( truth be told that's what I paid for it too!)

However the whole time I had it I was nervous about bore score, rear main seals and various othe Porsche weaknesses. I would bet it would never have had a problem but it made me enjoy it less. never had hgf on the two series ones I had either but the difference is I knew I could fix that for reasonable money. Bore score on the 911, however unlikely, is a 10k problem.

I guess my advice to myself would be - next time buy with warranty for peace of mind.
