Surely they've had enough time to gather money already though - like a lot of cars in this thread so far, well with the exception of.

I reckon something like the Ford Sierra, especially in things like Xr4 trim may well represent good buys given the normal cars that have disappeared + RWD thing..
Ford's racing Puma is another good one. I saw a <40k miles supposedly pristine example for sale for less than £4k about 18 months ago, and it seemed like a bargain then, never mind in years to come..

I reckon the only 205 GTis, and even Scooby P1s, Colin Macraes etc that will become worth much is the stupid low miles examples that few on here really want to own as we'd all want to use them, plus they will already be demanding a premium, so the investment potential is still limited.

Short of that, look at what makes a car valuable, taking the mk1/2 escort as a nice example:
RWD, so presumably good to drive.
Motorsport heritage.
Already had a rare / valuable performance model worth way more than it probably should have been.
Many rusted away.
Many more stripped for common kit car parts.
Coolness.
Decent car in the first place.

The old Toyota Corolla / AE86 is another nice example, especially with the additions of:
Import only model (applicable to AE86 / Gran Truenos only obviously)
Cult classic thing via TV / comics (add the Audi Quattro in here too..)
There used to be lines of them, all painted lime green at KH rally school as well...
'16 MINI Cooper S - Family fun hatch
'98 Lotus Elise - Fun day car
'04 Maserati Coupe GT - Manual, v8, Italian...
'18 Mazda Mx5 - The wife's, so naturally my daily
'19 Ducati Monster 797 - Baby bike bike

Another possible future classic could be the
Clio Trophy
Honda Integra

Aboslute fantastic machines to drive and sure they will be appreciated in future years.

You might well be right but your still not likely to loose money. The first step is low or zero depreciation, the second is something that might go up in value. Predicting low depreciation isn't that hard - relatively desirable (Good, quirky, or iconic) relatively rare.

The Racing Puma is a strange one. I've really fancied one for a while but something always stops me buying one :?

I know everyone rages on about the 205Gti but wondering whether the 309Gti may be a left field bet for an appreciating classic.

The motor journalists at the time raved about it (and often preferred it to the 205) but everyone was intent on getting the smaller 205. Suspect that the 309 would be a lot more scarce and for that reason may have the potential to hold higher values over time. The only fly in the ointment is that they do not have the cachet of the 205 so that may keep the price down.

Another potential would be the Renault Spider but they seem to be keeping their prices between £17-25k for ages now http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3977727.htm

Yassum

Only 500 made so potential classic tag has already caused the value of used 8C Competizione to be in "overs" territory

If Chris Evans is still around in ten years time, he'll buy one for a hefty seven figure sum

Can't help but think the Clio V6 will go up in a few years. Look at the R5 Alpine Turbo. Would need to very low miles and not crashed (not as easy to find as it sounds). You just need to wait for the chavvy ones to disappear. I reckon I can pretty much guarantee defenders will be worth their not inconsiderable weight in gold once LR stop making them in their current form. People will always want good 300tdi station wagons and the like. They are simple to maintain, so wont carry the fear factor of the TD5s and TDCIs. Galvanised chassis examples always a good bet. Buy a few and stick them in your garage. Sell them in a few years for double your money.

I made a grand on my V6 in 6 months :)

The owners club try to control prices by advertising cars they have no intention of selling high to raise the market value. All that happens though is that people that need to sell their car look like their car is massively under priced so people stay clear as they think it's dodgy.....

I was adding it up the other day and out of the 6 Lotus I have had thus far (new one on Saturday) I havent really lost anything significant. I am not suggesting that they should be treated as investments or assets or will all be classics (although they may) but all said and done its not a particullarly expensive brand to own second hand.
