Time Attack Brands Hatch - In car

Post by gambler » Mon Jul 16, 2012 4:10 pm

Here is a bit of in car footage from Brands Hatch last weekend.

I eventually finished 2nd - 0.18s from 1st place. There was a lot of traffic in the 15 minute final as there were 2 red flags.

Final - Very very slippy as 4 engines had let go on the Saturday and 3 engines on Sunday. Unfortunately, when i cleared traffic and was on my fastest lap. 0.4s up on the previous quickest lap. The turbo let go :(

Qualifying - Dry but still pretty slippy. Includes and early off when i was working out how fast I cant go round surtrees with some horrible understeer.

looks very slippy mate, but you have a 4x4

need to turn in earlier on the first corner get on the power, take a bit more kerb on exit. You can see the apex its has tyre makes on the kerbs

this is the very same corner.

Image

Its one of those corners you love it when you nail it and Ive held on the power and said "please make it, please make it" HA HA

great result :thumbsup

Been round that entire corner sideways in a race. Tyres went badly! Love it. First time clare came to watch a race. She was convinced i was going to ahave a big off. Love that corner, as Scotty says, a real "oh f@@k" moment till tou realise you've got it then the dive to druids... Genius.

Wtf is that thing like to drive?

Good effort . So bizarre watching it when you aren't trying to get past the cars in front. :damnfunny spent the first lap willing you past the guy in the white car

Scotty - Had to turn in late and completely miss the racing line as someone had just dumped an engine full of oil on it about 20 mins before and there was no grip. We also cannot turn in too early as we are not allowed to cross the pit out solid white line as TA cars tend to be in and out of the pits during a session. As our cars are lardy with lots of power we tend to apex really late anyway and focus on getting the welly in as soon as poss. You are right about the commitment and using as much kerb on the exit. Paddockhill is probably my favourite corner in the UK. There is so much grip on the compression at the bottom of the hill. My quickest dry lap (not on youtube) i was right over onto the exit kerb. We are very closely watched about having 4 wheels off though, they disallow that lap. I had already been warned.

4x4  We may have twice the wheels driven but we have over twice the power... and no traction control

Dirkpit - Luckily he puts the fag out when he is filling the car with race fuel.

Andy - I bet that was a rude awakening to motor sport for Claire.

The car was absoutley mental to drive.Amazing fun but so difficult to try and get a clean lap. We had just put on a bigger turbo and it would have been much less of a handfull on the old one. I put in the race fuel for the final as it had been dry 30 mins before, so the car was probably putting out 650Hp. It was the slippiest track i have ever driven with 7 engines going over the weekend and 100 gallons of detergent going down on saturday night. I walked the track on saturday after testing and nearly fell on my arse on the racing line at paddockhill.

Being stuck behind the evo was a nightmare. I edited out one of the laps as i was stuck behind it for 3 laps and it slowed me down considerably. My quickest lap was the one where i let him get away but still caught him and was slowed down. He was on flying laps too, so had no need to pull over for me. That car is a really serious piece of kit and did a 53s round Knockhill. It looked much too stiff for the wet conditions. It is cocking a wheel on the 1st lap. When he did let me by, i was on my quickest lap, 0.4s up on the 1st sector, thats when the new turbo packed in which probably cost me the win. I lost by 0.18s

Yes totally different piece of kit to my boring 211.

I noticed the car looked to stiff, but not as bad as the Evo you were following.

All good and your heading in the right direction. :thumbsup

Great stuff as ever Scott.

Pity about the turbo,... I guess that's all part of the joys of motor sport :D

:damnfunny good to hear he puts it out before refueling....had to laugh at that!

bad luck on not wining... but the up side is that you know you would of won if mechanical probs didnt come along.

talking about, too much power for a four wheel drive car ...i remember, hearing one of the evo's going up KH straight and wondering what is that noise :scratch , ..untill i twigged it was wheel spinning in all four wheels  ....sounds a lot like a car skidding on the brakes

Scotty - Id hardly call your 211 boring. Probably my 2nd favourite car that I have driven on track. I just wish my car could brake and turn in like yours.

Dom - Thanks, we have had a bit of bad luck with mechanical issues with the car this year. It's all part of the development process with the car having a lot more power as we are now in the Pro classes. The turbo's have been a bit of bad luck. With the new turbo, all I needed was an extra 300m

Dirkpitt - I was running 530Hp at Knockhill, proabably around 600 in qualifying and 640 odd on race fuel in the final. THB i am in the lower end of the power scale in club pro. Most of the evo's are running about 700 odd and Walter Morris' Skyline is 920

The 2 holes cause a lot of drag (so I’m told)and I don't have oil coolers there anymore so there not needed. Were not allowed to change the bodywork so cant permanently fill them in. It was also a cold day so added a couple extra to the radiator intake.

it was a bit 8) to see you in the rear view mirror of the exige coming from KH, on TT, in your white lid and 211.....did bring a smile to my face

gambler,

yeah i did see the skyline and it was a bit quick up the straight  didnt realise he was knocking out 920 ponies....nice when you have a big budget hey
oh, i was talking to kenny the other day, and asked what sort of prize money you get for wining and he said "prize money what prize money  " all done for bragging rights......is this so??

The slower skyline was 920, the quicker one which is in Pro class is 1000 hp they are both running sequential boxes like most of the rest of my class. All the rest are running dog boxes with sequential shifters made by a company call IKEYA, not the flat pack people though. I am still running a syncro box.

There is no prize money at all in Time Attack, not even free entry for the class winners. Some of the Pro class cars are costing in the region of £300,000 to build, if the labour is taken into account.

Decent results have helped to get sponsorship which has made a massive difference. I am now supported by RA Motorsport Developments in Perth. Their help is invaluable and having their clout behind me helps to get free or massively discounted stuff from their suppliers.

That's a pretty good write up from Riggers. Shame I did not get a mention as I passed the car quite a few times... Usually sideways!

Good result mate. Shame about the turbo. :(

My mate was racing in the Ma5da Racing championship that weekend and was pretty pissed off at the amount of oil being put down by the Time Attack cars.
