Sorry to hear that Kenny. I've been made redundant three times now and every time it's felt like a massive kick in the balls, it's always worked out best in the end.

Horrible to go through but I'm confident you'll do just fine. Good luck :blackeye

Not good to hear Kenny, it is an odd feeling when you are suddenly cut loose from what has been your world. I have only been through it once but as others have said it often turns out to be a fresh start. Best of luck in finding something soon.

neil wrote:Sorry to hear this Kenny. As Craig and Mike have said, the oil industry's very buoyant at the moment. Are you a structural engineer? I'm sure if you fancy a move to Aberdeen you could have something pretty quickly - have a look on oilcareers.com. Contract is definitely the way to go. Let me know if you need any pointers
I have been looking for a switch to the oil and gas industry for a while, unfortunately every advert I have ever looked at has insisted on experience in oil and gas. If I could I would relocate to Aberdeen in a flash, the money in that industry is night and day compared to what I do.

For those that asked, I am a Structural Engineer, job title was Senior Structural Engineer, I design everything from Mrs McGlumfler's attic conversion to billion pound retail/office/health/school/commercial etc developments, manage the projects from conception to completion, look after a team of junior engineers and technicians and have 13 years experience. Also, and not trying to blow my own trumpet, but I survived 4 rounds of redundancy until the doors closed so someone thought highly enough of my abilities to keep me on till the bitter end.

Thoughts on getting my foot in the door of oil would be appreciated.

Cheers for the best wishes everyone. :thumbsup

I'd just ignore that bit and punt your CV in anyway. Oil & gas cant be that different to what you've done previously - the only addition is probably blast loading. Also worth putting it in to the likes of Aker, Amec, and Wood Group. You could also go down the Project Engineer route.

Kenny, sorry to hear about the news. structural eng are hard to find in Aberdeen. I know a couple and will see if they have any leads. In the meantime the big eng contractors are usually hiring. Amec, Aker, wood group. I agree with the experience comment, a capable person can adapt and learn and the oil industry is getting used to taking people from alternative industries.

Don't be fooled by the papers/news. Only extremely senior people made the decisions which have left us in the mess we are in today - and they are all long gone now. All UK taxpayers money is all but paid back and therefore the equity you have in the bank that I work in is purely profit for you.

Unfortunately we are in a no-win situation at the moment. We can't prop failing companies up anymore and we can't lend to businesses that don't meet the criteria, as we'll never get out of the recession we're in and make a decent ROI for the government (and therefore you, the tax payer). But then if we don't lend more money, it's frowned upon and we're scum of the earth.

Either way, very sorry to hear about your job loss Kenny. Glad to hear however that you did the most sensible thing in polishing up the CV and applying for new work :thumbsup

Banks are businesses that have to make money too. I have no ill feeling towards them, the guy that pulled the plugs on us was just doing what he was told.
The exorbitant wages or bonuses of some people in the banking system is difficult to stomach, even for capitalist pig dogs like me but hey, sh*t happens.

My biggest complaint against 'banks' is that they no longer lend. ALL the projects that have stalled are down to one thing, lack of funding. I don't blame the banks, I blame 13 years of corrupt and inept government from the Labour party. Anyway that's another story and argument...

Companys are now doing a lot of cross training. So even if you have a degree in a completely unrelated industry they will still hire based on the fact you can learn so don't just look at structural jobs. If the O&G industry is your goal then you really shouldn't have a problem other than you don't have an ABZ address. Try agencies as they handle a lot of the positions around the town, Ruth got her job through an agency even though we already knew Gary. Going direct rarely gets past the letter opener who could be a secretary, call the agencies and spend sometime in the town doing interviews with them to begin with.
