Droning sound?

Post by cjm » Mon Aug 20, 2012 11:38 am

I have started to notice a new noise with my S2 111s. A dull droning sound just after I start the engine. If I jump in the car turn on the ignition I hear the fuel pump prime and stop, I then start the engine and after 5 seconds a dull droing sound starts. Its not very loud and it doesn't seem to change with engine revs or I can't hear it once the revs are above idle, the tone does alters breifly if I switch the headlights on and off. I did notice comments on SELOC about the rear alternator bearing drying out on the 111s due to the exahust postion, would this be early signs of that? Anyone had something similar or any thoughts on what to check?

edit - It does remind me of the sound my 205 gti fuel pump used to make when the tank was very low and it was running on fumes!

Sounds very much like alternator bearing. Probably the best way to check is get in through the wheelarch, slacken the pressure on the alt belt (by loosening the alternator clamp and swinging it back) and spin the alternator pulley. Should be smooth as silk.

Ha, no wife to worry about!

I'll have a poke about at the alternator when I get the chance.
