Anyone have any experience of the Audi R8, or know of anyone who has one and can provide advice on best model to go for in terms of gearbox etc. Post 2010 models out of price range but 2009 and older just about managable
I know I should be staying in the Lotus fold but 4 years of frosty stares from my beloved every time the L word comes up is getting tiring and the R8 or an AM seem to be gaining traction...

Andy Gordon bought Peter Bennet's, so they will have plenty of advice.

Peter had some issues with the gearbox and it had a recall for the oil cooler pipes in Andy's ownership but he seems to love it, I've driven it a fair bit and think its a great comfortable, useable supercar! Only thing I can think of it needing done this year was a service, MOT and rear wishbone as the bushes were worn.... Really nice cars!
Cheers

they can also do 3 abreast overtaking with lotus 340R's
Peter seemed to love his apart from the faff he had with the gearbox issues!
One of my other mates got one of the first in Scotland and still has is, absolutly loves it!

It's all personal preference but I had my heart set on one, tried it and found it too soft. It was more like driving a fast BMW than an elise / exige, good and competent but not like a go kart.
That said I don't know anyone else who feels the same!

Only moans I've heard from Andy about his is it drinks like a fish. Really bad. Can't even blame his foot, as he noticed this the first time he used it on a Motorway schlep south to a trade show, with the rest of the crew in the Rangie, with a trailer, which got better economy by far.
Not much of a disadvantage really.

It's a lovely way to turn petrol into music IMO. I never get tired of hearing them. Saw a V10 spyder in Abz, and I definitely prefer the sound of the V8!
I'd have one if my piles of cash were starting to litter the estate and scare the horses.

Would pretty much agree with the above. If too soft then press the magnetic ride button, I found this too hard for road use but great for a smooth track. The feeling of softness may well just be a result of the active suspension doing a good job.
My gearbox issues were pretty much all down to the dealer. It is a lambo unit which probably came out of a tractor and is supposedly bullet proof.
Solid, reliable, use able, just chews tyres and fuel. Even servicing seems to be every two years.
The 'auto' is a robotised manual and quick but almost unusable round town. Every journalist recommended the manual iirc.

In answer to spec.
For resale.. Magnetic ride (button by gear lever), dvd sat nav, b&o stereo (metal ring round speakers)
Heated seats, and extra lighting package nice to have.
Cruise control is not standard
People like carbon side blades.

Will not do anything this side of Christmas.
Thought about changing the wife but that would be even more expensive....

R8 is awesome - probably the one i use the most.
Lovely place to be, sounds great, good drive to , although not that lairy unless heaviy provoked.
A true every day supercar, and far better put together than an Aston.
