I used that technique on the exige once - could get plenty traction to go forwards but couldn't get the nose of the car out of its parking space (nasty camber outside the house). Had someone pointing out that the car was rear wheel drive shortly after

Peter76 wrote:Morning all! Had no option but to use the BMW today. Got stuck only briefly at the top of my road, but think that winter tyres might be a good idea. All the main roads were fine, but I remember my old beemer was totally useless in the snow and this one doesn't seem to be much better. An old colleague mentioned a couple of years ago that winter tyres made a huge difference to his BMW, but he seemed so enthusiastic about it I got the impression he was exaggerating. Would I be being a pikey if I only put winters on the rear? Alternatively, I've seen these on eBay....

Car is currently running with run-flats. 225/40 R18 front and 225/35 R18 rear. It'll be ok to stick 16"s on won't it?

Apologies if this was covered earlier in the thread, it's 39 pages long!!
Have the same wheel option on my 3 series Msport 2011 and went and bought a set of 16" alloys and winter tyres from Gumtree in Inverurie for £475 and the set was less than 300 miles old and cannot believe the difference it is easily as good as my X3 on standard wheel although it has 19" fitted so it is not a myth I have had 5 BMW cars an this is the first time I have fittd snow tyres and wished I had done it years ago last one wouldnt even get out of the drive if there was snow on it  .
Cheers

As others have said, yes. If anything you would be better fitting them on the front so you can stop. Going is the easy bit, stopping less so

I have them on my BMW and they transformed the car, its quite funny seeing peoples faces as you pass them in a RWD BMW :thumbsup

I fitted mine on Saturday, so i was in the good books with Lynda this morning

(that's why I think Mike will do fine, that and his lack of imagination).

Kilmarnock has as usual had no snow, or anything particularly slippy. So no opertunities to be smug with my winters.

Dunlop 4Ds awesome on the Golf over the weekend. Nicola also got out the drive OK this morning, more than can be said for neighbours Navara. It was abandoned next to a kerb down the slope...

370z was very interesting, coasting in neutral as drive can push on the locked up fronts!

Pikey effort from bloke at work, winters on front only of fwd hatch. I pointed out it'll want to swap ends when he brakes...

No snow? At least one of Kilmarnock's famous residents made it in to the paper - keeping Kilmarnock on the map :thumbsup

Scooby was fine on summer boots today. Managed to get up the hill and round the corners. Didn't have to test braking on snow though... I suspect that's where it won't be so good!

Despite coping well with the ice-encrusted road at Dom's on Saturday, I decided to leave the elise parked under the snow in Glasgow this morning.... and as Nizzy said above, it turns out Ayrshire is fine but wet.

Winter tyres. Discuss.

Interesting. I needed to get 2 new front tyres for my wife's Civic, and the garage recommended Hankook all season tyres, so I got them. They seemed pretty good in the snow on the way back - not quits as good as the full winters on the Volvo, but it's hard to compare as its AWD.

Guess we shall see!

I put hankook all season tyres on my Mothers Nissan almera about 3 years ago. They were an excellent all round option, especially if it's not a high performance car and relatively low miles.
