Been car hunting for the last couple of weeks with a view to moving the E-Class on for something a bit newer with less miles. It's been great for the year and a half I've had it, but I think I've been lucky (previous owner splurged around £12K keeping it on the road the year before I picked it up). Probably time to shift it before I get one of those bills.

The initial brief (from the wife) was 'decent boot' and nothing too sporty.... that pretty much sums up our current E-class, great for wafting around.
With a budget of around £11K, I was checking out 3-Series tourers & C-Class estates from around 2007-2008 (and the odd 4x4). I'd pretty much settled on the 3-series. Before taking the plunge on one I'd viewed at a dealers, I wanted to check out the Saab 9-3 estate as well (I've always kinda liked the weird look of Saabs... apart from the Dame Edna 9-5). Popped along to the old Saab garage in Glasgow and the wife immediately declared the 9-3 estate as a bit frumpy... so it was ruled out. :roll:

But, in a complete turnaround from the brief... she took a shine to the 9-3 convertible deaming it's boot as 'not too bad'. When the conversation turned to whether we should really be buying a car based on it's ability to swallow 3 suitcases once or twice a year, I realised that my internet searching over the last few weeks had been a complete waste of time :!:

So, some further internet searching took place and I was astounded by how little you can pick up a reasonably new Saab up for these days... Saloons, Estates, Convertibles...whatever... all silly cheap. I know they have always been seen as a poor mans Merc/BMW/Audi, and residuals have never been as strong as the Germans, but Saab going to the wall must really have hit the 2nd hand values harder than I'd realised. There appears to still be a supply chain in place for parts and plenty of indy garages to service them.

Anyway, I located a late 2009 (59) rag-top in red, with a few extra options showing 39K on the clock through West for under £8K (just a smidge over £8K when I added a 2yr service & MOT plan to the price).
I know they are marmite cars and not exactly known for their dynamic driving experience... but deal done, and if we manage to get some sun this summer it'll be great for family days out. I'm now not sure if I'm a hairdresser or an old frump.

Nearly bought a 9-3 when saab were in their death throws but the dealer wanted stupid money, Really liked the look of a turbo but I wasn't prepared to spend £500 a year on road tax.

The engine designations (for the petrol models) confused the hell out of me to start with. They do 3 versions of their turbo'd 2 litre... 2.0T, 2.0t and 1.8t.
The 1.8t & 2.0t are the same 2 litre engine, same turbo & same intercooler.... just a different map !
2.0T has a bigger turbo.

I've gone for the 1.8t and will live with it 'as is' for a while... but for £500 both the 1.8t & 2.0t can be re-mapped to close on the 2.0T power (of course, the 2.0T can be remapped even further).

I'm hunting for a cheap estate at the moment and hadn't even thought about SAAB's to be honest. Might scurry off to autotrader and have a quick look see, thanks for the heads up :)

I made money on the second RX8 I had.

(But lost 8K on the first).

I've spied a 9-3 estate for sale, but thinking a dull Audi might be better long term.

Bear in mind that my sister had a 59 plate 9-3 estate (think it was an X or something) and it got written off last week after a fairly innocent looking crash. Long story short they simply couldnt get the parts in a reasonable timeframe so they just wrote it off.

I'm sure, like TVR and MGs, the specialists will start making parts soon but i know bits like rear light clusters on the estate are a nightmare to get hold of just now.

Lovely cars mind - my dad has a TD 9-3 estate and a petrol convertible.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

Lol no it's a family of accountants and teachers

Dad had Saabs from the very first 900 turbo days and then a new one every few years until he sold his 9-5 4 years ago.

Yes but as i understand it, it's not the oily bits that are writing the cars off - it's body panels, mouldings, lights, interior specific parts.

Also remember the reason Saab made no money was they changed almost every GM part they got :lol:

Yup, made £1500 on it after 9 months of ownership :thumbsup

Checked prices recently, they can be had for £3K. Scary.

I've just bought a 2005 9-3 aero saloon. its the 2.0T 210bhp. FSH 86k for £2200. Great car for the money. I had mine remapped by a guy on one of the Saab forums and now have 250ish BHP for the grand total of £80. Goes like stink now and the mpg has even improved slightly under "normal" driving.
