Yes, I did hear something about the timing chain tensioners falling apart - Lunching an engine while out of warranty doesn't really bear thinking about!

I think I'll have a look at a few Leons over the next few weeks - Interior quality is a concern; having been driving budget cars for the past 5 years, I feel like treating myself to something a tad more premium.

(And I did read of the Leon's bone shattering ride qualities in FR form... :) )

Also been looking at other cars fitted with the VAG 2.0 Common Rail TDi - And can't help but notice a slightly leggy (~70-80k) facelifted / 2009 Audi A6 could be had for around £11k.

Appreciate it's an old model, but being a run out edition, they can be had loaded with leather / nav / bluetooth / LED lights etc - The 2.0 will hardly set the heather alight, but at 139g/km, it's 'cheap' to tax by Irish standards.

Would owning one for a couple of years be residual suicide?

Well Ross
We've moved the goalposts a bit with the A6
The price is certainly keen as it books £500 higher ....even with that mileage

Residual Suicide................I doubt it
"Crystal ball" thinks the most you will lose is about £6k in two years............and then it will be worth around £6k for the next two years after that
It sounds like a settling down/nesting purchase...........and you'll get two child seats in the back

Wagon's are pricey... But yes; if one falls into budget, I'd probably prefer it... :)

Appreciate the goalposts have been moved - The more I looked at pictures of the Leon's interior (even with the optional nav in the centre console) the more it looked like a budget Korean offering.

I'm all for cheap cars (indeed, my Pug cost £250), but if I'm spending decent money on something, I'd like a decent quality interior.

The mid-life crisis in me is tempted by a Le Mans spec A6 for all the bells & whistles:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251209590154? ... 1423.l2649

...but, in the words of Mr Boag, 19" wheels with rubber band tyres and S-Line suspension is not a good combination with applied to pock-marked Irish roads...

After some thought, I've elected to flog the S2000 first, and add the proceeds of sale to my budget pot - Might get me an Avant / something slighter newer / less leggy.

:cheers

Due to health reasons my father is having to sell his manual Seat Leon Ecomotive he has owned from new as he now needs a DSG model, so I can give you low emissions 99g/km but not so much on the fun factor. Similar to this one except in black 2010 60 plate with 20,000 miles.

Lotus Elan SE M100 - Needs a new hood spec. Now gone.
Audi S4 Avant. Now gone.
Golf R. Now gone.

An awesome pair - But as they're older than Sept 2008, the road tax liability is based on engine size, which means €1494 per annum (Over £105 a month! )

I really can't get my head around the way they've went with the road tax - I'd be happy with an older / cheaper car, but if I wanted anything 'premium' or 'sporty' I'd pay through the nose in tax... (If older than Sept 2008, I'm effectively limited to a 1600cc or below!)

http://www.irishlinks.co.uk/car-tax-ireland.htm

The only late 08-> E61 535d I can find for sale is an '09 SE which is up at £22450...(!)

Thanks for the offer of the Leon, Clan - But if I did go that route, it'd likely be in a Leon FR.

(Despite the Ecomotive being free to tax in the UK, it'd be over £150 to do so in Ireland - The FR's 'only' £80 more... )

In theory, yes - Although insurance is the issue.

Most UK insurers have a limit on how long they'll cover you abroad, even if you're willing to pay extra; 60-90 days seems to be the maximum.

Getting an Irish insurer to cover a UK registered car is problematic - Very few will, and those that do will seriously load what is an already expensive premium... :?

It's very frustrating, as there's so many cars like that which I'd love to own (and not depending on a car for work / doing many miles would mean I could contemplate running something a bit bonkers & thirsty).

Another (very) leftfield suggestion would be to acquire a pre-1980 car.

Advantages:

• Flat VRT rate of €200 (£160) on imports
• Only €56 (£45) Annual Road Tax
• Cheap Insurance
• Exempt from compulsory NCT (MOT) test (only pre 1-1-1980 cars)
• Zero depreciation

I could probably swap the S2000 for this, and avoid finance altogether...

(Although I'm not naive to the many disadvantages... )

As far as most UK insurers are concerned, the 60-90 days abroad are cumulative per annum, so I'd be stuck after 3 months.

A bit of googling did turn up a broker who will arrange a UK policy for a car kept abroad, without limit of time (http://www.stuartcollins.com/index.php).

Concern with this surrounds the Irish Police's ability to impound your vehicle, if they think you're a resident, not a 'tourist', and trying to circumvent traffic penalties by keeping it on a foreign reg - They can also report you to customs & excise, if they think you're trying to get around paying import duty (Vehicle Registration Tax), which could lead to confiscation & a sizable fine... :?
