My 160bhp peugeot 205 is gonna look the part in the next National Time Attack Series :thumbsup

You have the expense arguement all back to front.
Sticking a half decent engine in a cheap shell is what people who cant afford caterhams do. To put it in perspective my entire engine conversion on the 205 cost less than the price of a set of harnesses for the Lotus and less than half the price my mate paid for an uprated Turbo for his Subaru.

You would think that they could make an exception for a 72 year old disabled War Pensioner who could not afford bootees, not a threat to anyone, but just there for a bit of fun and the crack, whilst he can still climb in and out of the car.

Fair dues, there's an exception to every rule. However, classes are designed around homologated road cars and it's always been the case in competition that to maintain the status of a homologated car, the engine block at least must be as fitted to the original vehicle. I can see the frustration in this case, but in most classes of racing then letting you swap out engines would open the door to a pure chequebook class. These exist, of course - classes for race cars. In a road car class, you're supposed to be looking at close relations of what you can buy from a dealer. There has to be a line between a modified road car and a custom built race car and the blue book has really set that line at sticking with the engine block and layout as manufactured.

Your Pug wouldn't take much to get compliant with the regs if you wanted to run that, you'd just be running as a race car.

Edit - just properly read the thread from the beginning to see that this series only accepts "production" cars. Fair enough - can see your frustration, but the rule isn't a new one. Shame there wasn't a catch-all class for folks who wanted a bit of competition without going down the full sprints and hills route. TBH Mikey, your Pug would probably run well in sprints? Not quite the Time Attack event programme, but still cheap competition where you could probably do okay - would be in a class that you couldn't win, but from all I've seen of the hillclimb scene in particular, it's not the overall wins that matter to most, but the personal competition with your closest competitor...

New Knockhill "Time Attack lite" series for trackdayers

Post by Scottish Scrutineer » Wed Jan 30, 2013 8:35 am

To K'HILL series has been set up as a feeder to Speed events and possibly racing. The decision to go with Production vehicles is, in my opinion, sound. If you have a highly modified motor, then you can still compete in Sprints and Hills, but not in Production classes.
It does sometimes surprise us when someone spends a lot of time and effort to build a car, then find there are no classes they can enter into. It would be like sticking a V8 Cosworth in the back of a Formula Ford and expecting to race in F1.

I'd be up for this as well, appears to be structured so its reasonably fair.

Missing some track fun tbh, and body's not dealing well with my new career in downhill mtbing.

Piston heads here we come...

There's some work going on to try and persuade MSA to allow Libre cars. Honda Elise's etc may be able to compete if it gets through.

Renny
How zealous are you going to be over Crash Helmets?

I have the following
SPARCO ES FULL FACE
8 YEARS OLD
CARBON ARAMIDIC MIX
NOMEX LINED
IT ORIGINALLY WORE A MSA 'APPROVED FOR MOTORSPORT' STICKER DATED 2004
It also has a BS Kitemark

BS 6658-85 Type A/FR

Will it pass muster?

I can understand why they wish to stick with standard engines Renny, but I fitted a Honda because of reliability. With the Scottish Chamionships, both Sprint and Hillclimbs, and countless track days, the K series was constantly being rebuilt. N1 and N3 have done over 300K miles between them, and the engines and gearboxes have never missed a beat. The Toyota engines used now are very similar to the Honda, and the top models are between 265hp and 345hp,so if the series is based on power to weight ratio it would make no difference. As for costs, my car is worth a third of many of the Loti that will be competing.

I also have my Nat A licence and kit, so just a case of entry fees. I probably would have ended up as outright Sprint Champion in 2005 if it had not been for the operation, so it would be great to have another go.

I think they are very strict Iain, it has to have the correct code for the lowest standard that they accept, and it changes over the years.

I have just had a look at the 2012 Blue Book
and I think the helmets approval expires in 2016

H8OAG,
That helmet is OK.
Tut,
If we get the MSA to allow engine swaps, I'll expect to see you out.
