Re: Porker lovers
If its 911 research then I tend to use:
http://www.911uk.com
http://www.renntech.org
I am sure there are other forums for boxters, 924, 944, 968, 928, 912/4 etc
Also Pistonheads forum is good but they do not differentiate between models which can be a little bit awkward

Re: Porker lovers
Can I join in as a old Porker Lover, new Porker owner.
I did a Porsche Experience at MSV Bedford back in 2007, driving a Clio Cup Car then a 911.
I sold the Clio towards the end of the year so thought i'd try the Porsche now.
Not a 911 but maybe one day.
With the clio gone I did have the funds to go racing for the year with the Fiesta but when a offer came up for the Fiesta I grabbed it with both hands - Fiesta ST's seem very very hard to sell and I didn't want stuck with it - the power difference from the Clio was too big.
Hoping to do more trackdays down South with this as well as trackdays at KH and maybe the odd race.
The car is a 2002 Porsche Boxster S. Its got about 280Bhp. Mainly standard apart from a full custom cages cage, oddysey battery, gaz coilovers, 911 suspension arms, lightened flywheel, chipped, deep sump, braided brake hoses, exhaust back box, quick shift, racing seats, extingusher and it has a transponder fitted. Dansk de-cat pipes are on the way from Germany. Changed the steering wheel to a OMP Kubic - bought it back from the new clio owner.
Pics:

De Snorkelled the car and fitted a pipercross panel filter.

The car came with relays sticking out the centre console:

Ive hidden them away behind a panel:

Fitted grip strip on driver side.

The rear tyres are pretty big:

Cant wait to get it on track.

Re: Porker lovers
I'm looking for a 996 C4S or Turbo.
£22k budget is plenty for C4S but finding a decent turbo for that cost is a little trickier.

Devils advocate but why not an early 997 if that's your budget ? With £22k you're already there or there abouts.Gareth wrote:I'm looking for a 996 C4S or Turbo.

Lovely to drive yes but I'm not a fan of the 996 fried egg headlights personally, and it also has what is arguably Porsches lowest rent interior. A 996 makes a great deal of sense at £12k but not at 997 money. All IMHO of course.

Re: Porker lovers
I spoke to many people about £25k 997s and everyone of them (rpm, 911v etc) all said the same thing. Basically avoid. All told me a 996 c4s was better choice unless going for a gen2 997.
And i'd love to know why so many people think the 996 interior is low rent. Sounds like the usual internet urban myth nonsense imho. It's definitely not the worst interior Porsche have done. I've been in much worse!!
Clearly the 991 has a higher quality interior now... But go back and watch the likes of Tiff reviewing the 996 and you can hear them calling it a high quality luxury interior... Best one to date etc.
So much negativity about the 996.. Undeserved and not an opinion shared by those who seem to know about them!

Why ? Curious to hear the reasons for this. Headlights aside I generally like the 996 and think they're hugely undervalued at the moment especially in relation to some of the aircooled stuff but given a highly priced 996 or an entry level 997 there would be no contest for me.DDtB wrote:I spoke to many people about £25k 997s and everyone of them (rpm, 911v etc) all said the same thing. The 996 interior is good by Subaru standards but for me without a doubt it's Porsche's worst. I've owned several Porsche models over the years (front engined, air cooled, water cooled, mid engined) including an identically trimmed 986 Boxster. The plastics are hard and shiny, the seat leather sags and shows wear and tear too easily. It is not a high end, quality item. A late 90's VW Golf has a far classier cabin. I sold a 964 back in 1997 with 193k miles on it and the interior had worn remarkably well. I'd stop short of saying it looked brand new but it looked far better than the Boxster with 75k when I sold it a few years later.

Re: Porker lovers
Or maybe we're both confusing interior design with interior quality and craftsmanship ? I'm talking about the latter, the former is OK on the 986/996.

Re: Porker lovers
I've not got the knowledge about the 911 that many people have on here but I can tell you this;
I test drove a 2wd 996 then hopped straight in to a 2wd 2nd Gen 997 also for a test drive.
They were night and day, the 997 just felt better in every way.
Mind you, then I tried the Evora, bought it that same afternoon.......

From what i understand the early 997s have engine issues, or that's certainly what Dave was told by the specialists.Jeremy wrote:Why ? Curious to hear the reasons for this. On the interior stuff i've got no other porsche to compare it to but Dave's 50k mile 2002 996 looks brilliant inside with no signs of wear at all. I actually really rate it as a place to sit.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.
....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

Re: Porker lovers
I was convinced a 997 C2s would be the sensible choice, but the likes of RPM told me that they reject at least 9 out of every 10 they are offered for stock.
The Gen 2 is meant to be superb, but the Gen 1.. for the first few years of the model allegedly has issues with the engine. Several indies are apparently working on a 'fix' that will resolve or improve it, but without success yet. Smokey engines, bore scoring on the 997... all much more common than the 996 IMS type issues.... allegedly. Could be an element of hysteria I guess, but when multiple specialists all say that a good C4S 996 is a much better bet than a gen 1 C2 997, who am I to argue?!?
I simply asked what the best option was if you were spending up to £25k and not a single one recommended the 997 C2. Suprised me tbh. I'm normally in the "newer is always better" camp.
I know the style of the 996 interior isn't to everyone's tastes, but then I have tartan in my elise and I love that too. Quality wise, the 996 interior appears to be very good indeed imho. My seats have done 50k miles and look virtually brand new. Most surfaces are covered in leather so no nasty plastics to speak of. Headlights are a bit hit n' miss, but behind the wheel you can't see them and I'm still giggling on my commute!
